zee_werp Posted October 10, 2005 Wow mate, really, really nice flowers there...such vibrant colours, and very perfect formation. It (the top one) looks to be a species of Gymnocalycium. I don't know much about that genus though so not sure of the species. Very nice specimen though. As for the second one it looks to be a trichocereus...surely someone here might be able to point you in the right direction on that one. Bet its gonna be a nice flower too! faslimy Posted October 10, 2005 Notocactus ubelmannianus see this thread if you like them: http://www.thenook.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=36527 the Trichocereus is one of the grandiflorus/huascha type plants but you don't often see them that thick. It reminds me of this plant (from the Auckland botanical gardens)
GingaNinja Posted October 10, 2005 Thanks for the ID. Will either of these produce seeds or do they need to be cross pollinated? The trich should open in the next few days :D
faslimy Posted October 11, 2005 The ubelmannianus needs to be crossed, I had over 20 flowers in total on 4 plants but was late on pollinating them so only about half have started developing fruits as I type this. Yes the trich also needs another plant to pollinate it.
Amulte Posted October 11, 2005 the top one looks a little like a coryphantha sp. cross. though im not certain

Dodie Posted October 11, 2005 Would you be interested in swapping pollen edith? It appears that our cacti are pretty darn similar...i'll collect some pollen tonight...PM me if interested Thanks
Rev Posted October 12, 2005 they should cross easily but youl need the pollen asap b4 other flower open its best to pollinate as soon as they open in the evening so they have all night for the pollen to germinate and start growing
