Agamemnon Posted October 7, 2005 I was watering my cacti and succulents today and thought some leaf litter was caught up in one of my hoodia...wrong! It has decided to flower, so for those into hoodia porn, here are a few shots I have taken of it....and yeah the fragrance is like rotten meat mixed with concentrated cat piss..sorta like I imagine John Howard's breath to be like This last shot reveals a flower stalk emerging between the open flower and the bud. I counted three other emerging stalks around the top of the plant..should get pretty rancid around here soon! :D

zee_werp Posted October 7, 2005 That is one funky lookin cactus! Very interesting flowers...the way that they have just one petal. And interesting that they smell rancid too. Must be pollinated by flies or something.
Agamemnon Posted October 7, 2005 well i wouldn't insult the succulent, it couldn't be as bad as Johnny Howard's breath nice photos, and i guess being flesh-coloured they r definently gordonii. Yep Darcy, it's a gordonii.

planthelper Posted October 10, 2005 congratulations, what a beautifull sight! your hoodias look so good, the best looking ones of all i ever saw, you are a very good carer for them obviously. ok, and i start allready to ask, can i please (extra sugar sweet) be concidered as recipent for some seeds once it happend, i offer cash or trade. hoodia is said to give you aswell a sence of wellbeeing if ingested, but looking at them makes me feel just the same. hoodias rock!! Rev Posted October 11, 2005 for everyones benfit it would be most helpful to answer some questions if you can, assuming u get more flowers from now on 1. What are the techniques of pollen transfer paint brush? cue tip? cats whisker? 2. Are the flowers perfect or are they self infertile? ( i would presime the latter simply cos the planst puts so much effort into a bloom to atract insects - flies)

( i would presime the latter simply cos the planst puts so much effort into a bloom to atract insects - flies) I transfer pollen between flowers on separate plants using a cat's whisker or even a cactus spine. Yes, your right Rev, they are self infertile. The seed capsule is horn shaped and I wait till this is almost dried out and starting to split down the middle before I collect the seed. Hope this helps!
