Whilst intra-city transit is really dismal, inter-city travel is not so bad. One can take a train to San Diego for about $4 USD. The AMTRAK Surfline also heads to San Diego along the coast. This is pleasant if one has a seat in business class. Comparable to Rail Italia on a bad day. Northbound, one can reach San Francisco in half an hour by plane. I do not know how much this costs.
