0 glimpse Posted April 11, 2015 (edited) Kiwano is a fruit of many names—horned melon, horned cucumber and even English tomato. It is thought to be part of the melon family, has a jelly-like flesh and tastes somewhere between a cucumber and banana with the tangy taste of lemon. In its native land, the Kiwano is eaten as a snack or in salad while in other countries its vibrant skin is regularly used to garnish dishes as well as being an edible fruit. All parts, including the seeds and skin, are edible, though it is more common to eat only the pulp. African fruit Edited April 11, 2015 by glimpse

0 glimpse Posted April 11, 2015 (edited) looks tasty Edited April 11, 2015 by glimpse
0 Geebus Posted April 11, 2015 It is tasty it tastes like lemony cucumber. Slightly tomatoish. Very fresh zesty flavour would go excellently in a salad me thinks! Wicked! Cheers glimpse I'll distribute some seed to interested peeps. The vine is big and is growing on a pile of old vegetation and prickly pear cacti so I need to make a hook to be able to reach them safely once more ripe ones show up. They would also make a fine top for a mace!

0 DELETED ACCOUNT Posted April 11, 2015 My brother picked up a kiwano a few years ago and straight away his hands, face and eyes swelled up like they were going to explode. Turns out it's one of the only things he's allergic to (that, and aspirin, go figure).
0 Geebus Posted April 11, 2015 That sucks antonsyd! I have no allergies that i know of so I can't imagine what a reaction like that would feel like. Very unfortunate. These things are delicious.
0 waterboy 2.0 Posted April 12, 2015 (edited) know em as african horned cucumber, knock the top off and eat the pulp with a spoon. Kiwano may be a marketing name (?), the NZ crews were ramping up production (think kiwifruit). They will grow well in the cooler parts of oz as well EDIT - there is some varietal differences as well, grow a heap of them and there will be subtle differences in taste.
