magical9 Posted June 9, 2014 So I rooted this gorgeous center cut Berkely Botanical Gardens Peruvianus i got from solaritea. This thing rooted so fast and well! But i noticed yesturday while watering that it developed base rot ! Does this plant/stump look at all recoverable? Its like 80% goop/rot, I chopped the top most part and cut it into 3 propagation section. It just kills me that this huge well rooted stump is going to go to waste. zelly Posted June 9, 2014 next time you encounter this situation, do absolutely nothing other than take a few pics. you may learn a few things
magical9 Posted June 9, 2014 Only reason i cut it up is i had already planned to do so but once i saw the base was mostly goop i didnt wanna risk it getting worse and farther up the column. The entire piece in the picture is soft and feels like its full of goop. zelly are you saying it might possibly survive such an extensive infection?
zelly Posted June 9, 2014 zelly are you saying it might possibly survive such an extensive infection? yup putting things in perspective, i once cut away similar rot & paid a steep price. since then, I 100% ignore the black weeping mess & let it do its own thing and since then have never lost another plant because of it. I personally dont believe it's a form of rot
magical9 Posted June 9, 2014 interesting. well i hope this stump survives then, its got a nice root system for only having been stuck in ground 3 months ago.
solaritea Posted June 9, 2014 Ack! So sad! I love this clone. I would take a gloved finger and peel away the skin over the soft parts and gently ream out all the rotten flesh. That has worked well for me.

IMG_3368.jpg its weird but then again makes sense.. but i had been considering cutting it into propagation pieces for a few weeks now.. this just made the decision that much easier. ill be super stoked if this rooted stump survives. I considered scooping out the mess as you suggested but i dont know how much would be left after heh
someone Posted June 9, 2014 Just scoop out as much as you can, report in dry soil, and do not water until either it.dies or you see new growth. You will be surprised how resilient some cacti actually are. I have had a shriveled rotten rooted cactus throw pups after a few months. Now if I tossed it as soon as I saw that it was dead I.would not have that clone still in my.collection. good luck with your stump!
