Philocacti Posted April 28, 2014 Nice pachanois, but what makes you think they're monstrose?
magical9 Posted April 28, 2014 Long spines. and the rib formation. They look identical to the monstrose i picked up a few months back from the same place. I guess I could be wrong and worst case they are just authentic pachanoi which im always looking for.

EthnoGuy85 Posted April 28, 2014 Philo- these show a rib shifting/semi monstrose nature around every 12-18ins/30-45cm at least in my experience. Doublebenno-these are from Altman Plants in California,USA and are clones off one plant likely grown years ago from KK seed stock. Been told it looks like KK339 Nice score magical9 this is one of my favorites. First pic shows the tip getting its jelly bean on. It gets really weird looking when it starts goin monstery. M S Smith Posted April 29, 2014 (edited) magical, both yours and EthnoGuy's are the monstrose form of the "short spined T. peruvianus" clone. This particular clone is no doubt just a variant of T. pachanoi, but it also has a propensity for on/off again regular to monstrose growth on columns, but also for crests and dichotomous ramification. I planted three 6" sections in a single pot off of a 6 foot column and got the growth in the following photos. Both my regular and my monstrose form of the clone came to me from Cactus Corral before they closed shop. The stock appears to have then been sold to California Cactus Center. There is a plant at the Huntington (or is it the Berkeley?) that seems to be the original source. ~Michael~ Edited April 29, 2014 by M S Smith

Myeloblast Posted April 29, 2014 Mine's going pretty weird at the moment, hoping it stays weird for a while. Also picked up at lowe's, from Altmans It wasn't the focus of this picture, but shows the earlier growth's rib play pretty well
