hostilis Posted October 16, 2013 I have this bridgesii that is doing some weird stuff. It was in a batch of the first cactus I ever got. It was a pack of 14 3" bridgesii seedlings. Most of them are gone now from me killing them, or they're grafted. This one didn't grow for a while and got a little bit etiolated since I had the light way too high above it. Anyways, during the sumer it went 4 ribbed. I grafted it after that happened to a pereskiopsis. This thing has stayed 4 ribbed and now it's putting out random spineless areoles and then random creases and bulges in the ribs. Do you think that maybe it is a semi monstrose bridgesii? Here are some pictures. Sorry for the blurriness. This one is the top view showing the 4 ribs. This one shows where 3 ribs turned into one and it has a spineless areole and a crease in the rib on it too (blurry as hell, sorry) This one is showing one of the weird creases in the ribs again. cactuscarl Posted October 17, 2013 It looks pretty normal to me. They will drop and grow ribs when the conditions are changed. Its usually pretty noticeable when something goes monstrose, I just had my bridgessi go Monstrose for the first time and I noticed it within a few days
PhoenixSon Posted October 17, 2013 yeah bridgessi are typically semi-monstrose depending on their moods or whatever. Although some are more likely to do it than others, may also be because its grafted, well worth to keep an eye on it and grow out a segment on its own roots when ready. nice cactus anyhow
prier Posted October 17, 2013 When bridgesii's are planted in a clay soil along with regular trimming they will have a semi monstrose appearance. Generally when you cut back a plant the remaining stems will change the amount of ribs they have.
hostilis Posted October 17, 2013 (edited) This stuff happened before I grafted it. I grafted it because it was very interesting to me. I am happy with having a "Cactus of the Four Winds" anyways. I hope it stays this way for a while. And there actually is already a section on it's own roots. This was a 5" seedling when it started doing this. I grafted the top inch and left the bottom part. The bottom part is throwing out two pups now. Thanks for the responses! Edited October 17, 2013 by hostilis
