min Posted September 16, 2013 Hi, I picked this up at the weekend for $5, but I have no idea what it is as I'm fairly new to identifying cacti. Any help would be grately appreciated If you need any other photos to help identify it then don't hesitate to ask. Thanks!
0 Evil Genius Posted September 16, 2013 Its a cereus. Would say Cereus hildmannianus, which was called cereus peruvianus earlier. There are plenty of subspecies and i guess it´ll be one of them.
0 min Posted September 16, 2013 Thanks Evil Genius. Can anyone second that? Can you point out to me what makes you think it is Cereus Hildmannianus? Which identifying features gave it away? I'm just trying to increase my knowlege Thanks again!
0 gtarman Posted September 16, 2013 (edited) It's peyote. Eat it bro. But nah...Cereus is on the money...generally the way I pick a Cereus out from other columns is the distinctive way it tends to terminate growth and then start again next season, leaving the thin bits at various points along it's trunk. That and in many like this one, the ribs are quite thin and flat and separated. Some also bear delicious fruits...though I'm sure some of them are probably not edible either. But I have no clue botanically/taxonomically in general, so I might be wrong about how to pick 'em. Edited September 16, 2013 by gtarman
0 Dreamwalker. Posted September 16, 2013 I have some similar plants to this....and would agree with the other posts ............a cereus ..........and probably as EG suggest's............when it flw's ...........at night.........large white scented............shiviled by morning......will bear delicious fruits spineless ......taste like kiwi...............but heres the catch.......you need to find it an unrelated mate to cross pollinate it ....its self sterile..........or be around at 1pm in the morning lightly dust stigma with cement (pH thing) then self pollinate with pollen from the anthers.............really worth it .................see pic's of fruit and plants and info at.................. http://www.shaman-australis.com/forum/index.php?showforum=3&prune_day=100&sort_by=Z-A&sort_key=last_post&topicfilter=all&page=2 Trade seed of Cereus X's fast growing cactus with delicious fruit

0 min Posted October 24, 2013 Well it's looking like it's got some kind of budding flowers on it at the moment, I'm not sure if I'll manage to get them to flower though! Sounds a bit tricky! I'm very pleased with it though on my balcony I'll try and post some photos of the buds later. Thanks for all your help!
0 min Posted November 3, 2013 So here's what the bud is looking like today, is it likely to open do you think? I was wondering whether or not to set up a time lapse photograhpy of it opening, but I don't really want to set it all up for the night it doesn't open! Is there a way to know if it will bloom or not? There are two of these on it now.
0 zelly Posted November 13, 2013 It's most definitely gonna flower, although I personally doubt its a hildmannianus. with luck, you could even get some fruit
0 min Posted November 13, 2013 It did flower, but they have fallen off now. Here is a dark and grainy photo of the flower! I have lots of other ones though, just not with me right now. There were two flowers eventually.
