Bert&Ernie Posted November 23, 2012 The plant on the top of the graft is likely a variagated gymnocalcium yes they are a variety created in Japan I believe and the stock is certainly a Cereus no idea what species though

Sallubrious Posted November 23, 2012 That's a bit unusual, the vertical growth of the stock normally stops when it is cut. They fatten up a bit though. They still grow a bit I've never seen one grow that much.
bullit Posted November 23, 2012 it grows soo fast!! how long do i wait til i cut the pup off ???
Foo Posted November 23, 2012 The pup will not survive on its own roots. If you want to de-graft it you will have to graft it again. The graft is probs a Gymnocalycium mihanovichii
hookahhead Posted November 23, 2012 He is referring to the pup on the root stock. I am not sure how large it has to be, but I know I have had several 4-6" trichocereus pups root.
Stillman Posted November 23, 2012 I I have what was a big Daddy stock in the ground at my place, The Gymno was removed and the stock grew about 30 cm in no more than 6 weeks from a pup it shot nearly overnight, once the Gymno was gone. Fast growing stuff, And another weird thing the new growth has longer spines in some spots they would be a good cm? I don't know how they keep the spines down at the nursery I am guessing it s a heat stress thing maybe?
Distracted Posted November 23, 2012 it grows soo fast!! how long do i wait til i cut the pup off ??? I'd cut the pup off asap, probably not worth keeping to grow out
bullit Posted December 17, 2012 (edited) growing like crazy!!should i cut this pup now?? Edited December 17, 2012 by bullit
CβL Posted December 17, 2012 You can chop both of those pups if you want - as long as they are cut with a sterile blade, and then perhaps sulfur'd and allowed to dry relatively quickly - and then potted into reasonably small pots and not overwatered - then I practically guarantee they will make it.
Distracted Posted December 17, 2012 I would've cut the pup ages ago and put it somewhere out of the way to live or die. Maybe that's just me though...
2Deep2Handle Posted December 17, 2012 cut em off now! wasted energy going into the stock and not the scion! They will grow on their own feet, and the scion will appreciate the extra energy input!
