room Posted June 19, 2012 This was weird driving along and thought it was horse dung but looked to firm, couldnt resist stopping to investigate. Even weirder was the smooth skin , growing through roadbase linked in with a tree root visible in 1 pic . Maybe about 8 of these things growing. Cut one open and it looks like a truffle as big as a fist. Anyone got any ideas?
0 obtuse Posted June 19, 2012 (edited) Yeah!!! Awesome find. Pisolithus arhizus, commonly called horse dung fungus, often found near the side of the road. groovy fungus. And, yep, reckon its native. Not sure about its edibility. not a truffle. Cheers, Obtuse. Edited June 19, 2012 by obtuse
0 NSF Posted June 20, 2012 Funny that you say it looked like a fist, I'm pretty sure another name for it is dead man's fist. Or wait, dead man's foot...they are both names for different fungi.
