Crowdsourced Corroborree Cacti Book

Recommended Posts

Good idea.

what kind of cacti?

what kind of photos?

of ethno interest? or horticultural interest? or artistic value?

throw in some ideas.

this might get to something nice.

and, if we print a book, why not print some text as well as photos?

I'm in the middle of starting a publishing company with my wife. Our first task is a literary journal (which we should be releasing in a few weeks or so). But we've also been looking at getting two books printed this year, one of which is a short novel with about 10-15 full colour images of defaced blotter art littered throughout. We shopped around and called people here and in SE Asia. We talked to a few indie press collectives (Big Fag Press do some cool stuff). In the end, I think the books will be printed by an on-demand company. At least until we get bigger. These printers basically print a copy as it's ordered, so there's no excess printing, no big over-heads, and no wastage. One of the bigger names is blurb.com . Their books are very handsome and they're very reliable to work with. They're not cheap, but they're not impossible.

A big photo book of plants could be done well and beautifully with something like blurb.com, but as someone mentioned, you'll need copies of the hi-res images, or it'll look crappy. It'd also be wise to get one person to image grade all the photos so that there's a consistent visual tone throughout. I'd volunteer to do some of the design/photoshop work, but I'm up to my moustache in this sort of work at the moment (that one's for you, chnt).
