chnt Posted March 27, 2012 i just refreshed a page of another forum that is completely unrelated to ethnobotany or nature what so ever... and all of a sudden the page went red and said some shit about malware and 2 options "get me out of here" and "why was this page blocked". this forum has been around for years and i have been using this forum with no troubles for over a year, so what the fuck is up with that? does this mean i cant use the forum for now, or ever? thanks for your time. whitewind Posted March 27, 2012 Have you upgraded your anti-virus? When I bought this new netbook it had McAfee installed and it used to do that all the time. And it was really slow. So I uninstalled it and installed Avast which has the least problems of all the free anti-virus.
Evil Genius Posted March 27, 2012 Depends on how trustworthy the community is in general. If its a board with a name like "Hacker-Elite", i would be rather cauteous. But there are some things you can do to prevent being hijacked. Dont use the Administrator Account to surf the internet and set the Security Zone for the website in question to the maximum. Also, you can get yourself the freeware superantispyware and hijackthis to make sure you are clean. Also update Windows, java, active x and the browsers. As soon as your pc is definately clean, just create a surf account without the right to install applications to surf the web. This should take care of most possible threaths. Of course theres always a way into a computer but if you follow a few simple rules, you can make this to a very time-consuming task.
ballzac Posted March 27, 2012 The info you provided isn't completely specific, but it sounds like your connection is being intercepted, probably due to a virus, and maybe you are being redirected to a not so nice ip address. My personal course of action is usually to just format the hard drive and reinstall the operating system. That way I can be 100% sure that the problem has been dealt with if it is a virus. However, it obviously depends on how much work is involved, which is sometimes a lot if I have a lot of software to reinstall. A firewall should be able to take care of most threats that are reaching you from outside your home. I try to avoid antivirus and antispyware software these days. I used to use McAffee at one stage and Avast at another, and a few others including AVG. I find that most of them these days kind of behave like malware in themselves, and most of the free ones aren't really that free anymore. Norton is a particularly bad antivirus. I've seen people install Norton and not be able to get rid of it. If I think I may have a virus and don't want to reformat, I usually use trend micro housecall, which is free. It used to be a great in-browser one, but now requires a download and installs something with a nag screen, but it's still a good little antivirus if I'm desperate. Chances are that when you click on a link from a google search for porn and get that screen, it's because the website is questionable, but if you get it with a reputable website that many people use and you have been going there for a long time with no problem, then the problem is at your end and can be fixed by cleaning up your computer. Evil Genius Posted March 27, 2012 Yeah i hate Norton like the Plague. It eats itself into your system like a cancer. I heard skynet will be built by norton.
chnt Posted March 27, 2012 i use avast and the forum in question is about naruto, nothing sus. i tried it again and it had no warning, but googling it, it still says this site may harm your computer underneath the link... so i think i'll put on a full C drive scan with avast before i leave and see what happens after that, i'd rather not have to reformat, this seems like a lot of effort, but if it comes to that then i guess i'll have to. thank you so much for the advice. you guys are champs. Sallubrious Posted March 28, 2012 It could be a virus or sometimes the site could just be spoofed by some prick that is re-directing traffic where he wants it go. Maybe you should clone your drive after you have all the software you need installed ballzac, that way you don't have go through the re-install of windows, updates, software install, updates routine. I use clonezilla, but there are many other drive imaging programs out there.
at0m Posted March 28, 2012 It's more than likely that the site has ads. Ads can often get hijacked/loaded with malicious material, especially from less then reputable providers. (ie, non-adsense) but even then it's not guaranteed they're safe. The other, less likely, option is their site got hijacked & is serving malicious content. Either way, assuming you're upto date, run a full system scan now & one in a week when definitions have updated again.

Alice Posted March 28, 2012 Sounds like the Google-based warning for suspected malware? I recommend you install (free) Malwarebytes anti-malware. This is in addition / in parallel to whatever antivirus you run. I had a particular virus or trogan or whatever you call it, last year, and my IT guys at worked recommended it. Anyway, it picked it up straight away, when the antivirus missed it totally.

Good point Sally. I have actually cloned in the past but by the time I actually need to use the image, my setup has changed so much that it is easier just to start from scratch again. It's possible to clone it periodically, i.e. create restore points, but I quite like the nice fresh feeling of a newly formatted HDD occasionally.
