mud Posted March 18, 2012 Do you know the nightshade with little black berries on it? S.Americum and S.Nigrum It is poisonous when green..I assume its full of various tropanes.. but as the berry fully ripen, all the nasties leave. Settlers used to preserve the berries when nothing much else was around. I've eaten many berries from both..but the one with fancier leaves, i'm dubious- a friend and I got a lil dizzy from one berry. Anyway, the nightshade with smooth leaves.. yep makes an awesome jam. 1 part fruit, 1 part sugar and some water to blend.. cook it down till its thick.. let it set, and voila!
Marcel Posted March 19, 2012 I'm not sure which ones you're referring to, but I had a couple of the Nigthshade black berries at the suggestion of a fairly experienced ethnobot gardener, and it made me sweaty, nauseous and I dropped my lunch pretty unpleasantly. Not going to do that again.
