bogfrog Posted January 24, 2013 Thats what i thought too? It must only be about 15cm tall. Theres no damage to the tip or anything.. maybe he just felt like a change lol Haha sorry man, its my mild OCD coming out to play. Optimystic Posted January 24, 2013 I knew there was something of me reflected there... I think I must be OCD like a mofo, in fact im pretty sure of it but I only remember when other ppl say they are ocd... I kinda just tuck it all under the umbrella of a.d.d... eh I will get around to showing it... but I need to mull over it a bit ... I don't have all the decor and stuff and thus mine is not just a little but alot more bland looking.. but I will show it eventually
Optimystic Posted January 24, 2013 (edited) Meanwhile, I needed some zen so I sat with my first seedling grafts 7 out of 8 are showing obvious signs of growth :D Today marks day 12 (I have alot of you to thank, as before I even joined, more of my searches led to SAB threads than any other forum - Recommended 9 out of 10x by cactiphiles) how's that for a commercial They are all looking a little bloated, but the good kinda bloated the exception being the albino spachianus, which is still very tiny My Ariocarpus Fissuratus look like fricken cherries on a stick I am tempted to eat them (stop that) Due to their 'cherryness' they are receiving extra shade they look gorgeous tho This is my PcPach x ss02/ss01 Monster.. he made his first growl today cute as a button! and Alby.. I can't tell if this little guy is being absorbed or being influenced by chlorophyll.... whaddya think?I'm So Proud! I don't have to have the best window garden to find zen Cheers! Pinion Posted January 27, 2013 Ah, they're all so beautiful, Getafix! You should be very proud. Those lophs are very nice (it's interesting how each loph is very unique in appearance). How old are they? Spine Collector - awesome job (aww, they're so cute!) what's your setup like? Good to know they're ploughing on through winter.
Optimystic Posted January 27, 2013 (edited) Indeed those are some very happy looking plants @ GAFThank you much Pinion! I started the seedlings in a little enclosed area with 3 24 inch t8's... but my grafting space is in a grow closet that is 5ft by 5 ft... I guess thats approx 1.5 x 1.5 meters... the light in there is much brighter @ 6 4ft High Output T5's , but even with the grafts several feet below they are still showing signs of a little too much light... Im not even sure if the ario's are supposed to be so red, but they are putting out some fuzzyness today so weeeeee lol Soon I will be pruning some of my other plants to make room for another humidity tank and I think im gonna have to give away a crap load of pereskiopsis centers lol My werdermannianus graft started to shrivel, so I put it back in humidity and its looking better so , whew All indoors for now, however I have a little window setup also for my large seedlings.. the baby seedling are actually below it and the top ledge sits right next to the window ledge and I just have to rotate it every watering to keep the plants from bending so much... They can't wait to go outside BTW I did 3 more grafts a week later, and then 2 days ago I did 4 more grafts, but one of them was a double graft on a two headed pereskie... A bridge and a pach Next time I post here I'll try and remember to show my little window setup and the new grafts Edited January 27, 2013 by Spine Collector
bogfrog Posted January 27, 2013 Cheers for the inspiring pics Getafix and SpineCollector Getafix, that terschekii x psycho0 is a beast. I'm glad you posted all these pics, as i have a few of those hybrids on the grow - good to know what i can look forward to. SpineCollector, what an abundantly happy and healthy set up! Your peres are so lush they look like they have bright green wings and they are about to fly away. I think arios do usually go a bit red at the start, they should green up in time. My peres grafts arent looking definate so i put a 6 cell pack of peres tips into the moisture chamber on the heatpad to beef them up a bit before round 2. I did a few grafts yesterday after i scored a couple myrtillocactus in town. I grated my astrophytum caput medusa, and a astrophytum 'Haku Jo' onto the myrtillos, and then i put a pink gymocalycium onto a SS02 x juuls and grafted that tip onto a PC pach. Grafting is addictive when you get in the zone.

There is a few different varieties in there of which I have no idea which is which!! When they get bigger I am sure to be asking for id's on them

CβL Posted January 28, 2013 Today, was another bastard of a hot day. There was 6mm of rain this month - and already 'round here almost all of the grass (some people living in valleys have green grass, and the back of our property is shaded and the grass is green there too) has stopped growing, turned brown, and probably died. I just want it to rain again so the plants can grow. Those people who want blazing hot days when it suits them and green plants, will hopefully realize what a blessing the rain and clouds in general are - I get so sick of people whining about clouds. "waaahhhh, there's some clouds in the sky, WAHHHHH it's raining!!1 I'm a little baby who doesn't like rain!!! wahhhhhh" - I hope they get mega sunburned and learn their lesson .Anyway, today I did the rounds, and found my first case of actual rot. Somehow, despite this weather being so hot, a plant that I took a cutting from, and sulfured, had begun to rot through the flesh, in a line next to the vascular bundle. I chopped sections off until I met clean flesh, and sulfured again. This is the only plant that has basically sand for soil - so I'm pegging that it was just weak from its soil being crap.Gonna water them this evening, and hopefully they can grow a bit. Also dug more of tree-stump #2 - it's almost out.@Getafix: Your plants look awesome, and I must say that the Terscheckii x Psycho0 has me amazed. I can't wait to see it get huge. :D

Confidor may be an option also??? never tried it on cacti myself. Confidor (Imidacloprid) is good stuff, Just dont use it on Red spider mites. It is actually good for them, it increases their lifespan as well as stimulating their breeding, little bastards. I use ethanol against them. Booze makes em go in happiness. Edited January 28, 2013 by Evil Genius
Pinion Posted January 28, 2013 Spine Collector - wow, what a nice setup! You've got all variables controlled, and it shows in the photos (healthy looking plants). If the arios are still showing signs of growth, maybe they're starting to adjust to the light intensity now. It's strange how they turn red. I had a few seedlings turn a reddish-brown colour, but others in the tray remained green despite being exposed to identical conditions. lol sounds like you've got not only the cactus bug, but also the grafting bug looking forward to more photos and further progress! Getafix - Right, that's quite a reasonable growth rate. Flowers would sure make identification easier! I've got some mixed lophs going. Most are green, but I've got some strange yellow seedlings (they all receive the same light conditions). Not sure what this guy's problem is, it almost looks like a yellow double-decker loph
Optimystic Posted January 28, 2013 (edited) That fk'n bites bigred... When I first got my hoophouse I was so excited and then it blew over with the first storm and rolled over onto some yuccas! So I feel for ya but I know there will be a silver lining.... in my case it was a green lining I wish ya the best with your cleanup! @CBL, that sounds like every summer here ... when it rains in the summer I dance and get wet Thank You Bogfrog for noticing how happy my pereskies are... They really do fly! !! !!! Okay so here are some new pics from today... Enchanted Window Garden Enchanted Seedling compartment under EWG Enchanted Forest Enchanted Birdview (grafts down in the corner space) Just for Naja, here is my Enchanted Penis! yes my pereskies do the most work around here, coming second only to my penis, so they get pampered like a pharoe I actually have several penises... Indeed I am a wild one also I added a new plant to my collection last night but he's getting his own thread and I just opened some new beans: Ariocarpus Restusus cv Confusus Turbinicarpus lophophoroides Browningia Candelaris Browningia Hertlingiana <<< Pride in Gardening Edited January 29, 2013 by Spine Collector

bogfrog Posted January 29, 2013 Impressive set up SpineCollector. I spent the morning repotting cacti, with the occasional breaks to walk on our new tightrope in the mini-pine-forest. It took ages and i had to stop around 1pm because i had used up my 40L bag of potting mix and 20L bag of pumice. My friend came over and asked me ''what are you going to do with all your cacti?'' ''Enjoy them'' i said and she laughed at me, but i knew she had a point. Later i decided to count my trichos, i talleyd them up and i got to 98.. Not including any of my 100s of seedlings, stumps without pups or any grafts.. *!*!* So, if any NEW ZEALAND MEMBERS want a few cheap cacti, send me a PM! I think its time to have a wee clear out *!*!*
