What did you do to your cacti today?

What I find interesting is the Bridgesii x Validus that is a lighter green color. Where the heck did the short spines come from :scratchhead:

Damn dude! You're like me. Just planting tons of seeds, buying plants, going all cactus crazy. Hehe.

It'll be great watching those mixed seedlings grow old.

Well, happy Birthday. :) The fact i am saying that validus is not a real species, does not mean the plant doesn't exist in reality. It means that it's not a real species in the taxonomical sense. Backeberg and rauh should have moved the plant in terscheckii. So we are talking about varieties and sometimes its hard to recognize one. The validus variety can be recognized because of the unique spination, which makes it different from certain terscheckiis. But since it sometimes isnt as pronounced, it is hard to recognize in young plants.

Thunder, if yours turns out to be a validus type terscheckii in the future i am happy for you. Right now, i am not seeing the typical spination. Neither on my own Plant btw.

And i am referring to the books Die cactaceae from Curt Backeberg, friedrich ritters kakteen in suedamerika and raus kakteenvegetation von peru.

ok so the hunt is on for validus with zero spination in the top half of the areole , and a big fat ole straight as fk central spine pointing down

thanks you guys! -edit- and sorry EG for misunderstanding your view of the existance of validus ...

-and i got it wrong about the pot my 'validus' from mutant is in, i thought it was a 24cm pot but its a 30x30cm pot : 3

still my fave fatty cactus of my whole collection :) , ..

-does zelly's 'fields' validus look diff because of climate differences? or is that what immaculate ones look like ?

maybe i accidentally fell in love with a nature-beaten validus ? was this one on bretloths site

ive been so tempted to buy one of these, they're one of the prettiest of the short stuff crews

what did they say about watering it? (i have no clue about em yet)

(edit i don't think I would waste my money on one of those again , shame because they look so beautiful but wasn't worth the hassle in the end)

I just dropped a large seedling tray full of various Trichocereus, Selenicereus, Epiphyllum and others. At the moments like this, all I can say is thank god for xanax.

Luckily, it's all contained in the plastic humidity box, so nothing elso to do now but get properly sedated and try to pick up the pieces...

I grafted some of my from seed variegated Astrophytum myriostigma "Kikko" and A, Myriostigma x ornatum ornatum x myriostigma that were too variegated to grow on their own. Pretty stoked. They were almost completely white with some yellow and pink. There are still some variegates that have chlorophyl in them. They're growing super slow, but I'd like to have all that I can on their own roots with the variegates.

I also potted up some new plants I won on auction on ebay.

Side effects of megestrol may include:

Nausea.

Weight gain.

Fluid collection in the feet and ankles (edema).

Vaginal bleeding.

To date, the cacti have demonstrated no vaginal bleeding.

There has been some nice weight gain tho :)

Last week I mixed up a big tub of soil, with the intent of potting up some cacti. However, I still lacked one key ingredient... pots!

Tonight I was hellbent on playing in some dirt. So I looked around a bit, hoping that I find a pot or suitable container. No luck :(. It was to late to go to the hardware store, plus buying a bunch of clay pots adds up quick... So I did what I do best, sat down and did some thinking :bong:

Aha! I know what I can do... Let's recycle! Luckily for me, the trash/recycling hauler doesn't come until Monday.

So I grabbed 2 milk jugs out of the bin... did a bit more thinking ... and this is what I came up with.

Of course, we need some drainage. Instead of just poking some holes in the bottom, I decided to cut some slits instead.

IMG 0879

After spending over a year trapped in a 6" pot, it took a little finessing to liberate this guy. I almost swear I heard it let out a little sigh of relief.

IMG 0884

IMG 0887

IMG 0890

Happy with the results, I went ahead with the other one. A 6" pot hold about a qt, a gallon jug holds about a gallon :o.

IMG 0893

IMG 0901

Now that's a nice set of jugs if you ask me! While those two certainly needed repotted, it was actually their old containers I was after

IMG 0902

Psycho0 x TPM

IMG 0909

TPM x (SS02 x T. Pachanoi)

IMG 0912

The top part of the milk jug was used for labels. This is how I get all of my labels.

IMG 0915

I'm sure they're all happy to have a little more leg room!

With all the money I've saved by switching to Geico, I can buy more pot.

^^

if i want to strike an ordinary plant cutting or nurse a seedling back to green health i'll cut up a water bottle and make a little humidity chamber for them. a lot of my seedlings are planted in recycled yoghurt or butter containers. never overlook recycling your plastic containers for plants imo.
