migraineur Posted August 14, 2011 (edited) Hi guys, What are some ethnobotanicals that are good to plant around Spring and onwards? How would planting the seeds of these plants go in Spring? Mimosa hostilis Argyreia nervosa (hawaiian baby woodrose) Ephedra gerardiana (ma huang) Peganum harmala (syrian rue) Rivea corbymbosa (RC) Any recommendations would be much appreciated. tripsis Posted August 14, 2011 All of them would be good, although you might want it to warm up a bit for the Peganum harmala.
migraineur Posted August 14, 2011 Thanks. I want to grow some acacia too.
migraineur Posted August 14, 2011 How long do the seeds of each stay viable for? I don't want to order them and have them sit around for a short time only to find out I need to plant them within a really short amount of time.
tripsis Posted August 14, 2011 I expect they would all be good for at least a few years.
Heffa Posted August 14, 2011 Tobacco is one that is best to be planted early spring, along with morning glories. The earlier thy are planted, the larger and healthier they will become.
jebus Posted August 14, 2011 woo hoo! And i was going to spend hours on the net trying to find this info out! thanks.
Jonstn Posted August 14, 2011 I started my mimosa's and acacia's about 2 weeks ago in a seedling box, they're outside now all doing very nice, still quite small but the random weather hasn't effected them at all Tobacco would be sweet, something i def want to add to my collection

migraineur Posted August 14, 2011 What kind of soil do these like when growing from seed and when older? Mimosa hostilis Argyreia nervosa (hawaiian baby woodrose) Ephedra gerardiana (ma huang) Peganum harmala (syrian rue) Rivea corbymbosa (RC)
Jonstn Posted August 14, 2011 My mimosa hostilis sprouted in 2 days just using brunnings seed raising mix, using a premium potting mix for when i upgrade the pot
Jonstn Posted August 14, 2011 Except for the pic posted earlier, used jiffy 7 peat pellets those ones germ'd in about 5 days.
tripsis Posted August 14, 2011 I've tried growing Peganum harmala before Ethen, though not very successfully. Had them hang on for months, until I decided I wanted the container they were in for something else, so I transplanted them. They all died shortly after that. If I was to try again, I'd do it when it starts gets really hot and the weather is all over the place. Hot and dry seems to be go with them. Just use a good quality mix for all of them migraineur. See my thread on germinating Ephedra seeds if you want some tips.
planthelper Posted August 15, 2011 ethen, i would call your catha seedling a Ph f2. it's a beauty, it looks semi red and semi narrowleaved to me, around 1/3 of those seedling turn out that way. i will wait a little longer to plant out more catha seeds, but they even do, germinate with low temperatures, but it takes much longer. migraineur Posted August 15, 2011 So what is everyone else going to plant/grow this spring?
Ethos Posted August 15, 2011 I'm going to be sowing some brugmansia, nicotiana tabacum, peganum harmala, 3 more hostilis seeds left, some more maidenii plus a HBWR vine or two . Growing and caring for plants has become my favorite pastime/hobby/obsession. Hey PH it is a beauty, what is the story behind f2? just a cross pollination of narrow and red? Also is an ambient temperature of 18oC - 23oC alright for catha germination?, the lowest it may get to would be 10oC Cheers guys, Ethen
planthelper Posted August 15, 2011 the f1 had a vw mother and a nl father = planthelper the f2 was open pollinated, the mother was a ph and the fathers are unknown (self pollination, and a red, vw and nl were close by). i would call all plants grown by the ph seeds ph f2. i planted out loph seeds already, and once it's warmer try my hoodia and other cacti. it's aswell a time wher you want to get your peres organized. Ethos Posted August 16, 2011 (edited) yeah I have to sort my peres out my peres cuts don't seem to be rooting as well as they do in summer heat, might need some rooting hormone. I sowed most my loph and some A fissuratus seed at the start of this month, I am going to wait a little to sow some super pedro x j3 and Icaro seed. got plenty of cactus cuts rooting in prop sand. And thanks again for the info PH Edited August 16, 2011 by Ethen
migraineur Posted August 16, 2011 Does anyone here grow saguaro or golden barrel cacti?
Argyreia Posted August 16, 2011 (edited) I'll be planting some Mimosa hostillis, Ipomoea violacea, some more HBWR, Rivea corymbosa and once it warms up a bit I'll have a go at growing Peganum harmala again. Edited August 16, 2011 by Shadow2
jebus Posted August 17, 2011 Hi guys, I was thinking I would like to plant some: trichocereas pachanio trichocereas macrogonas ipomea volacea phalaris aquatica desmanthus illnoensis echinopsis peruviana KK2152 But the problem is I am no green thumb, yet (although I grew a mean tomato plant in high school) I assume the cacti are relatively easy to germinate and look after, correct me if I am wrong please, but would it be worth while doing all this at once or should I pace myself? Just worried about seed shelf life. I still need to google the right time for the non cacti. any advice welcome, thanks
Heffa Posted August 17, 2011 (edited) Start with the cacti (assuming they are seed) as they will take the longest, make sure you check out the propogation methods around forums and search engines, as theu take the longest (a couple of months till you replant them) and require a bit of setting up. Then in one night boil your desmanth and put your MG in water to sit over night and plant in the next few days. The Cacti are a long and patient process of trial and error until you find what works. Ipomoea will go crazy as long as yoou give them something to climb on and in my experience, desmanth seem to die around 1 inch tall but persistance is important. Ive heard of someone who is starting/continuing some: Tabernanthe orientalis Tabernaemontana pandacaqui Acacia maidenii acacia cultiformis acacia complanata acacia floribunda acacia acuminata acacia longifolia Acacia leichhardtii desmanthus illinoensis psychotria daphnoides artemisia absinthium mimosa pudica Chillis and maybe others Such an exciting time of the year!!!!
