Silene ID

Question

Hey boys and girls, hopefully you can help me with an ID here..

A few months back I sowed some Silene seeds, I believe they were S. capensis.

Nothing popped up so I chucked the pottle with the seeds outside.

After a couple frosts plus a light snow some Brugmansia sanguinea seeds that were in there popped up and also these:

Are these Silene babies or something else?

Cheers!

I think so. They vaguely look like it, from memory. I'll check my little pot of Silene when I get home.

I just had a look and I'm even less sure than before. Sorry. Maybe someone with more knowledge of this plant can chime in...

i never grew silene so i can't say but:

i think they are, because it would make sence that this cold climat plant only germed well after some cold stratification.

keep us updated, this is interressting! :)

No, I don't think so. I don't remember exactly how my Silene capensis looked as a seedling, but I'm pretty sure it was different than the ones at the picture.

These did end up being Silene capensis seedlings, they are now flowering :)

Just thought I would say as the snow/cold snap seemed to trigger their germination, might be handy to someone trying to grow em.

nice work! when my silene seeded I had more then i knew what to do with!

i just trimmed mine back a whole new plant sprouted from the centre. I wonder if any of the silene seed dispersed amongst my garden will germinate and leave me with a garden full of silene

i might go chuck mine in the fridge! have been down for almost 2 months

Silene capensis self-sows well in my garden, often a substantial distance from the parent..
