They've got it, it's a scop.

To root it, you are best to dust with sulfur powder and let the cut callous over. Then just plant it deep enough to stand up in some appropriate soil, and water correctly.

Good luck, very nice cactus.

Peace.

You don't need sulphur, it's just a safety measure. Just leave it in sheltered, airy and dry location for a few weeks, then plant up. It's unlikely that it will put out roots while it's still cold, but as long as it isn't sitting in saturated soil and the cut is properly calloused, there shouldn't be any problems.

yea well I will defiantly wait till spring or summer to root it but I recently got a cutting off my San pedro and I think its starting to get rot where took a cutting from is there any thing I can do.

it is under a patio and gets indirect sunlight, oh and its only a tiny amount of orange stuff that is kinda gooey and wet

It is dry? Has to be kept dry, preferably somewhere warm too. Bring it inside if you can. If the rot is spreading, cut it again until you see no rot and callous it somewhere better. If it isn't spreading, it should take care of itself, but make sure to keep an eye on it.

Also, if you're going to wait to root the cutting until spring, keep it upright so that it doesn't grow towards the light and bend, though it might not be a problem as it should be dormant anyway,

Are cuttings that have been put in soil meant to be watered from day 1? Or do you wait until it has started rooting to start watering?
