mutant Posted February 27, 2011 (edited) Awesome job some very special cacti there. hey HN would the funky cultivars carry on elements of the phenotypes If crossed with a normal astro asterias/myrio nudum/kabuto or whatever? Or they are produced by their breeders in some secret formula? I remember reading in auscacti forum f.e. kikko trait does not carry on with normal crosses Edited February 27, 2011 by mutant
solomon Posted February 27, 2011 Wicked man, some of those look unreal
Hellonasty Posted February 28, 2011 Thanks for the kind words everyone. Mutant, the Kohyo ( meaning Autumn colour ) trait does carry but as with all Astrophytum Cultivars they are very hit and miss. You can make a good cross of Kohyo X Myiostigma Nuda and 2 out of the 100+ seeds will have the trait or if you were lucky 99 out of the 100 will have it. The genetics are complex due to such extensive interbreeding of the species. To ensure you have the best chance of success the best way is to cross the plants as above, the Cultivar x Regular. If you do Regular X Cultivar you will be less likely to get the desired trait carry HN

Alice Posted March 1, 2011 Are some of those astro-->pere-->hylo grafts? And yes, would love to see more.
Hellonasty Posted March 1, 2011 Centipede, yes I will get a shot for ya. Alice, the only double stock grafting I do is for Ariocarpus. Most of these are young seedlings grafted to the stock they are on.
CβL Posted March 1, 2011 Legendary HN. :D I have got some var. Super-kabuto seedlings which are coming along nicely. Once they're developed I'll post pictures too. And also a few GC plants which I didn't grow, so not much point photographing them.

solomon Posted March 3, 2011 cheers for uploading the caput-meduasae photo, will have to find some photos of these in their natural habitat later. Noticed on your blog you have a photo titled Loph Variegate + Kikko. is that a Loph x with Astro? if so i am extremely jealous, as if a Loph hybridized with another genus wasnt cool enough already. Hellonasty Posted March 3, 2011 Naja, hehe thanks mate Centipede, No that plant is not an inter-generic hybrid, I wish 'Kikko' is just a descriptive name that refers to the elongated or protruding rib formation The descriptive names that accompany most Astrophytum cultivars come from the Japanese language and are short names that give a description of a feature. They are usually linked to the environment or everyday objects. For example: "Kabuto" means the regular form of asterias "Kohyo" Means autumn colours (This cultivar changes colour depending on the season) "Hakuun" means white clouds "Akabana" means red or violet flowers etc there are heaps of them Sorry I know you didn't ask for all that info, got carried away. Alice Posted March 3, 2011 Alice, the only double stock grafting I do is for Ariocarpus. Most of these are young seedlings grafted to the stock they are on. Ah ok I see what you've done now, just looked like there was a small pere segment between some grafts. Awesome pics mate.
tripsis Posted March 3, 2011 Those square ones are awesome.
Hellonasty Posted March 4, 2011 Alice, Yes I let the stock pup/shoot so i'm grafting on nice new growth, I find with seedlings the younger the stock growth the better chance of success. Tripsis, I have a few more 4 ribs plants and couple of 3 ribs I will post a pic next week for ya I had a heap damaged/eaten by large parrots !!
