What is this?

Recommended Posts

Since i brought my pilosocereus down in my basement over the winter, something odd happened.

It's on the tip of 3-4 spread thorns (not in one special place on the cactus)

It's like a shell or a cocoon of a very small animal/parasite.

And I'm wondering if you lads have ever seen it before, or if I should go get some pesticides or not :P

Some pic's as well (digital microscope 136x zoom)

Looks like a lacewing egg. They are laid on a hair like stem which is meant reduce the chance of predators like ants from getting to the egg. Lacewings predate on common pests like aphids, mealybug, whitefly among others. Yeah, so don't worry about it. No need for pesticide.

how big is it?

lace wing larvae are interesting little monsters.

With the "thread" + the "egg" about 2-3mm, and compare the thickness of the thorn in the first pic, then you'll have a pretty good perception of how it is!

Thanks' for the good answer Amazonian!

Sounds awesome... Eat them damn whiteflies!

I find it very cool that it's on the tip of a thorn

i dunno though, i thought laceweing eggs were arranged in a little circle. when you see the hatchlings it almost seems as though they hang around inside of the ring for protection.

edit: seems they don't always arrange the eggs in a ring
