Suspected Acacia Species...

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

Long time reader, first time poster :)

Just need help IDing this suspected Acacia Species, the images are attached.

Plant Info: Found in "Eastern NSW, Australia", tree estimated to be 4-5 meters high, wide canopy, spine-like leaves.

- BTW, Can SWIY upload any Acacia/Acacia ID material? - Possibly that CSIRO CD I hear talk of? Hell, all or any botany info?

Any help greatly appreciated,

Cheers!

Yea, "Looks like" is true. Though, if you look closely the foliage is actually little spines that come off like what I think is referred to as 'Bi-pinnare Leaves'.

- I've never seen an Acacia like this one before, if it is one, certainly looks similar.

Someone posted this link a few days ago. Kudos to whoever did (sorry, I can't remember)

Thanks Mate, Nice Link!

... Any Ideas people? scratchhead.gif

the Acacia genus has evolved into 2 main groups... one group consists of species bearing phyllodes (which are broadened leaf stems which function like leaves) and the other group consists of species with fern like pinnate leaves like the species in your picture...

hope this helps

Not that i am great with plant identification but i do grow a few Acacia as food plants for caterpillars. I think i am pretty close with saying it is a Fern-leaved Wattle , Acacia filicifolia . Stone me if I'm wrong.blush.gif

Ha ha. You know what? It does seem to have shrunk. Not sure what's happening there.

As for the name... think Ra - Sun God , Think Bael/Ba'al - Lord of heaven, Think Ba'al thazar - Lord of heaven protects the king

Ra - Ba'al - tha - zar

Simple?

Yup, think you nailed it guys. - Thanks for the help! - Haven't seen any pods around like some featured in the links, but might not have been looking hard enough or it mightn't be the right time of year.

Gotta say, it's somewhat demoralising. I got full excited when I found this guy, thought all my years of trying to get that substance were over.. But yea, will get no yield outta this type of Acacia.

Been searching for an Acacia's with that substance for for a while now, given up on considering importing extracts.

Think I might need to turn to growing from scratch.. Everyone knows most of the seeds one might want are online, wish I did that all that time ago but.

- Guess I'll have to wait another couple years. sad.gif

Thanks Again Guys,

BB

hey mate, welcome, people sometimes have interesting acacias for sale here, so you might get a bigger one if you lurk more in the trade/sales section

the second one may be a.retinodes

Yea, I think your right, a friend said he thought he had some and they were sometimes called 'Wirilda' or something.

- You recognise the other one? ...Looks a little like the one in the original post but it has leaves instead of spines and a Teal sort of colour.
