kenny Posted February 18, 2010 I have a pach that is about to show me its lovely flowers. Just wondering if there is some sort of pollination process I need to educate myself on in order to get seeds? Will post pics, hopefully by the weekend they will be open. strangebrew Posted February 19, 2010 (edited) No the only Trichocereus that appear to be self fertile are the ones within what I think has been termed "the grandiflorus complex"? T.spachianus definately is, as well as the red-flowered huascha. Edited February 19, 2010 by strangebrew
Flip Posted February 19, 2010 If I may add that the self sterility is both mechanical as well as on the genetic level you'll need fresh pollen from different genetic individual to generate seeds. be careful... lots of surprises await.
Auxin Posted February 19, 2010 you'll need fresh pollen Are you sure about that part? I've never yet heard of a cactus that cant accept several month old desiccated pollen.
strangebrew Posted February 19, 2010 I've never heard of anyone having success pollinating Trichocereus with old pollen. Even in the fridge it doesn't last that long, freezing seems the best bet.

I'd really like to find out more about these plants. I've often wondered if all the E. huascha colored forms are hybrids between T. grandiflora and Soehrensia sp. Gorgeous flowers. I had no idea they where self pollinating, I've been hand pollinating these for a few years now. damn.
strangebrew Posted February 20, 2010 (edited) I can't remember now sorry, I'm sure someone has termed all that miscellaneous group such. I've seen multiple spachianus plants all over the place with fruit, in fact I've never seen one without. Not 100% positive on huascha but I've seen a plant in the middle of nowhere with fruit, as well as a few assorted others that seem to be hybrids that always get fruit. Flip Posted February 20, 2010 Well it seems as if this is oddball of the group that can self pollenate.
