Chiral Posted November 10, 2009 NINE people were nicked over a haul of more than 60kg of the drug kava in Maningrida on Saturday night. Police reported they pulled over a Toyota Landcruiser for a routine inspection and came across 12kg of the drug during their search of the vehicle. The 34-year-old man in the driver's seat and his two female passengers - aged 34 and 19 years - were hit with kava possession and supply offences. Police said they then continued their investigations, which led them to a nearby property. After searching the premises, police said they seized about 50kg of kava and a small amount of cannabis. Two men and two women were arrested. One of the men, aged 39, was later charged with kava supply and commercial possession offences. Police estimate the total street value of the kava was about $50,000. Territory Duty Superintendent Bob Harrison said Maningrida police had done a good job. "This amount of kava has an estimated value of around $50,000 when sold in the communities," he said. SOURCE
