Question

Found in the Blue Mountains region on a pile of wood chips. They don't seem fresh, but I'm not experienced enough to know how long they have been there for. Most were quite dry (some with moist gills), and the stems were tougher than I had imagined they would be - bit more like a soft (but firm) twig rather than a 'mushroom from the store' stem.

These are taken at the location as found, and are very true to the real colour of the mushrooms, whereas the images further down are not a great representation of colour

On the 3rd and 4th images you can see the spores have dropped on the stem. No real purple colour, more of a chocolate brown. Am attempting a spore print, but not sure if there will be much left to drop... we'll see. I'm sure the spore colour in the images above will be clear enough for someone experienced to judge.

Now onto the other images. I know there are alot, but I want to give the best chance of an accurate ID.

These are the same mushrooms, but in warm afternoon sunlight with flash.

Sorry... thought I should add that I also found these on the same pile of woodchips - different mushrooms altogether, but it may help with ID of the mushies above to know that these were also there...

It does, but are there particular signs that indicate to you that they aren't subs? Just trying to learn more, so any extra info is much appreciated!

I disagree... They kind of DO look like older, dried subs to me - but it is very hard to tell with these ones. The bluing on the stem is a dead sub giveaway, but it is just hard to say with the others.

I think taking photos with a flash is a good thing as long as it doesnt wash out the photo as it brings up a lot of detail.

Print them all - at hte very least your on the right track, but I have reason to believe these are subs. DONT EAT THEM based on a reason to believe however.

Thanks Hyphalknot - all that you have said matched my thinking exactly (including the not eating ;) )

I have two printing now, which I plan to leave until tomorrow (based on them being older, I assume they will drop less spores). Also have a mycelium sample which I have sandwiched in damp newspaper/cardboard. Plan to introduce it somewhere appropriate (closer to home) and see what happens - at least that way I have a chance of fresh samples in the future...

Any more comments welcomed - they all help my understanding.

the first photo looks like a sub, its possible for the others. you will not get a gaurantee with specimens that old and i urge you not to eat them based on maybes. instead wait for the next rain, head back to the same location and examine the next flush then you will know for sure.

Were all those pics there when you first posted? Particularly 2,3 and 4?

They didnt show up when I made my post, yes, I agree the ones with blueing such as 2/3/4 etc. look like subs but from the pics that showed up on my screen when I posted they were not easily identifiable.

Sorry for any confusion.

AA.
