0 tobydoo Posted March 29, 2008 Thanks Zelly, could you back off a little on the pic. It was a little blown out white! The one I've got is taking on a nice blueish cast to it. And since there's seemingly so little info on this cacti, how do we know we've got what we've got and, if we do, what have we got! Do you have any other info on this cactus that's solid? If you could send a "farther away" shot .....that would be great.

0 tobydoo Posted April 1, 2008 Is that cactus grower in Australia? Do they sell online? can ya say?! Mine look very similar (will post a pic soon) Just not nearly as "dense" with spines. Also the place I got it from is kind of quesionable ....I think. Nothing truly solid to base that on, just a gut feeling. I'd be interested in checking out your grower if I can do so on line. And yeah Evil, post some pics! Thanks.
0 trucha Posted July 8, 2008 Maybe its just the photos but Stenocereus hystrix is supposed to have straight whitish spines with blackish tips and shield shaped areoles so I would ask your supplier some questions about their source and identification. I can get some images of what is sold by Ethnogarden posted as well as what is growing at the Huntington although I won't be able to get back here for another week to do so. The Huntington's is maybe around a meter tall and does not show any indication of not wanting to grow erect. Ethnogarden's claim is only one stand from the Dominican Republic is useful. Djerassi was unable to find any detectable alkaloid or saponins in the material they looked at.

0 trucha Posted August 13, 2008 (edited) The first photo is the commercial cutting of Stenocereus hystrix I received some while ago that said to be from the Dominican Republic. It died soon after- perhaps from methyl bromide or whatever happened in the couple of weeks or more that it sat quarantined. (A more recent attempt failed due to rot in transit so I have yet to see it flower) The second photo is Stenocereus hystrix from Puerto Rico growing at the Huntington.
