darkhorse Posted October 10, 2007 This question just popped into my head... I always assumed the latex was white, however when in europe a few years ago, I observed a bunch of poppies with pink latex??? Is this normal? Or is it unusual? Thanks in advance... Doopie sp. Posted October 10, 2007 Its normal, latex colour varies naturally between individuals of P.somniferum . In the countries where they have advanced breeding programs for poppies (france, spain I think, and Australia - ie down in Tassie), they have a variety of poppy strains which have different alkaloid profiles. One strain might be their 'high morphine' yielding strain, another strain might yield higher amounts of codeine or thebaine or whatever. They are all still P.somniferum, its just that they have selected and bred to facilitate particular alkaloid profiles and I know that latex colour can differ significantly between these different strains... or cultivars I guess you'd call them. transDiMenTional Posted October 11, 2007 in my theoretical exp the darker the (fresh) latex the better.
AndyAmine. Posted October 12, 2007 In my passeed experinace I have found the darker, red/burgandy colored stuff was the good shit and it seems to smoke/burn for longer.
Conan Troutman Posted October 12, 2007 thought color change was due to oxidation to more prefrable actives...or do yours bleed red latex?
John_Barleycorn Posted November 23, 2007 It could just be coincidence, but all of a FOAF's white-seeded varieties (Persians, Indian Raj, Gigs) have bled pink.
darkhorse Posted November 26, 2007 the stuff bled pink and dried a dark red burgandy as described above by another...
