tripp'n Posted December 11, 2001 Hi all, Just one silly question for a newbie to pots. Just want to find out what others use in the bottom of their pots to stop to much soil escaping out of drainage holes, but keeps drainage at it's best. Thanks everyone. Darklight Posted December 11, 2001 Rocks, pebbles, paper towells ( by the time they rot the potting mix has compacted somewhat ), bones, the remains of former Avon ladies, you name it..
NordicRituals Posted December 11, 2001 I've found that the best is waterproof membrane, which i think you can pick up at most hardware shops. But use your imagination... heaps of things will work.

NordicRituals Posted December 12, 2001 waterproof as in the membrane itself won't be affected by water, but will let water go through it. it's like a criss-cross of fine fibres, keeping the soil from falling through but water can drain fine.
Guest wira Posted December 13, 2001 I usually use the larger bits of gravel. If you use the clay pots with the hole in the middle of the base, a broken bit of crockery inverted over the hole is quick and easy and does the job.
Happy Cadaver Posted December 13, 2001 (edited) I use large poos for Bodo's man drainage, illegal of course but who cares for bodo anyway? Edited April 19, 2007 by darcy
Guest auto302823 Posted December 14, 2001 You could try a couple of layers of the mesh tape used for jointing hardiboard too. Hardware stores usually have it.
sokr8s Posted December 15, 2001 I like the cheap plastic fly screen you can get from hardware shops. You can get a metre for a couple of bucks and it will last for years.
Guest Captain Rats Posted December 15, 2001 Bonzai tree growers use a metal mesh, similar to fly screen that you can buy from nurseries.
