I am basicly educated up to Yr7, after that I only lasted 6months in each of yr8, yr9 and yr11

Have done a few courses here and there but mostly dropped out of them due to a fear of failure complex.

If you have any hort cert2 or above, and actually paid attn rather than bludging thru it with the minimum, and have done your share of personal study in the meantime, hort def. quals. as higher education I'd say. I did a level 2 in basic hort and then a level 3 traineeship / wholesale nursery production. Thinking of doing my cert 4 training thingie, has a lot of potential. Whereas noone I will name (gday boss) has a diploma, the full jamie durie, and doesn't know N drawdown from mag def (thats why hes the nursery manager, haha, love it). Plenty of hort qual people are just garden by numbers types, if you want a half arsed construction of 20mm gravel and aggie pipe, they're the ticket... but very few seem to be either more scientific OR more "feeling" types. Just an observation... a lot has to do with the fact that there are people drawn to it "personally" and those that basically noticed its one of the easier things to get into from a cold start that isn't a completely useless qual (not that I mind hairdressers or flower arrangers mind you ).

Is it just me or are the options on the poll a lil thin on the ground?

TAFE level hort/employment (assuming you are working relevant to that qual and not in another capacity etc) would not be considered primary industry to most, horticulture is seen usually as a standalone thing (PI is Agriculture, the broadscale business" whereas hort has a lot of systems fiddling, value adding procedures, more like a bonsai form of ag science? the two of course cross over in some ways... but farmer joe in cunnamulla has little use for Growing Media (the book that is), and Peter Poinsettia doesn't read country life or bayer cropscience propaganda. The short version is that agriculturalists and primary industries produces plants or animals for the products they yield, whereas horticulturalists mainly stick to producing plants for plants sake (what you do with em once you pay for em is your problem). Of course there are freaks in there just to mess with all that (floriculturalists) but they are still more or less one group or the other.

Interesting poll! maybe we should all move somewhere central and start a massive nursery or something, if we have enough admin n cashflow types to keep track of stock etc

take care,

GD

sorry about the option, i went through nearly 10 options when making the poll, when i specified it more it made it too big and got abit overwhelming to the senses, so opted for the basic broad answers, which made it easier translate. and the primary industries choice is a very broad choice, if you notice the actual choice is Other. i should have put a few more examples next to it, but i think it maybe to late now.

the poll was just a way to get a feel of everyones background in education, and to find out whos involved the arts. because im at art school and searching abit of advice n see what type art and ideas the artists on this forum would like to share. And to find out why people chose what they did (if its not to personal or invading your privacy). Id also like to say that i do not have any prejudice against peoples education status, personally i believe most of the best and valuable education is not formal education!

anyways thanks heaps for the reply GD it had some awesome points.

hopefully this clears thing up a little, if you have any questions dont hesitate.

by the way, does anyone else miss 1/6 of WS posts? ahaha

edited because i forgot to press the space barfor abit

Lots of study, but no degrees due to the fact that I never finish anything because I'm an idiot.

I feel you AndyAmine, I dropped out in year 9 but stopped learning (and basically attending) as soon as I hit high school (which is year 8 over here BTW).

It's all my parent's fault, or somebody else's anyway.

Very serious student of life and all its trappings including uni, work, relationships between beings(plants, people, animals, chemicals etc.) This serious study seems to be teaching me that taking any of it seriously is pissing up a rope. Funny, that's what I thought when I was 5 years old  It's taking me all these years and all this learning to get back to that. The Tao is funny like that. Little bit of a tangent; just a sample of my learning, as it is about as difficult to classify me as it would be to do so for Yowie or any other member for that matter. I feel you, Yowie, but I think he's just attempting some "factual" human connection. shivaspacetech, you'll likely begin to realize more about these folks gifts and fields by hanging out, searching for info you need, reading posts, seeking answers to your ethnobotanical questions.

that's only half an hour away from me, i don't live at gatton, just have a mild inclination to study there, what with the number of horticultural classes they have. can you breifly describe how appropriate st-lucia is for learning horticulture?

Cool komodo, my wife and I are looking into property development at the moment... like everybody I guess. Ultimately though, we want to design and build an eco-friendly home and become semi-self sufficient... have you done much work in this area?
