It's alright, I put her out of her misery and deleted her account. All other options appear to be too complicated

Just out of curiosity, what are the cookies there for? and should they be manually removed or is he just shitkicking and makes no difference? iv heard of cookies can be used for "spying" stuff but i doubt T would be collecting information on us all.

cookies can't be used for spying, but they can be used to collect information. eg, how often you visit the site that set the cookie, what sections you looked at etc.

The cookies set by SAB are ALL default settings, regardless of whether this is for the shop or the forums etc. I don't even know how to make them do things, I just know what they are capable of.

One essential part of cookies is to keep you logged into the forums. This would not be possible without cookies. eg, when you have google open in one browser window and sab open and logged in on another, if you close the sab browser window [but not the other one] and then re enter sab, you will still be logged in. That's the magic of cookies.

This forum software [just like most web2 applications] only works with cookies for some reason. No idea why it sets more than one - I've never looked. I presume it would set them for the gallery and the blog too. Really don't know and also don't care too much. Only super paranoid people and shit stirrers still carry on about cookies. If you're worried about too many cookies then get a cleaner that wipes them as soon as you close the browser.

Just had a look in my cookie folder and had a good chuckle. The cookies actually tell you what they are for. here are some:

* topics read [this determines the read/unread status of threads]

* forums read [this determines the read/unread status of subforums]

* session ID [this stops strangers hijacking your log in]

* sidepanel [probably the profile panel]

* coppa [remembers if you are under 13 or not]

* member ID [not rocketscience]

* profile view [customised controls for your profile]

* charset [the character set used to display messages]

and a few more which I can't work out for sure. Basically any customisation you select will be stored as a cookie. Even a forum like EBA and AE have at least 5 cookies and they have virtually no customisation.

Oh, and even if you thought I was spying, the most I can spy is your activvity on the forums, eg when you logged in, which threads you've read and what language you use. But then again most of that is visible in the admin panel anyway. Rivetting stuff

scary scary cookie infiltration indeed. now where is my tinfoil hat?

lol cool, thanks for clearing that up.

I never thought you where spying but was just wondering as to what their action is.

anyway, i think its the porno site cookies (common,we all have em :) ) that should bring more security risks then a community forum.

actually, no matter what the intentions, there is no way to compromise security with a cookie. all a cookie can do is reduce your anonymity to the site owner insofar as he 'could' keep records of where you've been on his site and what you've done.

As far as SAB cookies are concerned, as I said, they are all default settings, so anyone who is really concerned can have a look at the IPB site to see what each of the cookies do. I certainly won't bother.

darcy,

i don't know much about the web, but i guess at your site one get's excactly the same cookies as over here, apart from cookies, specialy used at forums. in short, i think, if sab would be your site, it would disperse the same cookies.

you make it sound a bit like some of those cookies are of dubious nature which they are obviously not!!

every web site gives you cookies, just delete them if you don't like them, i think ghost wash is a good free internet wash programm...
