Torsten Posted November 10, 2002 I've been getting interested in the different gourd shape varieties and my collection is growing rapidly. One of the most important uses of gourd in this area of the globe seems to be as the holim, a gourd (usually curved) that is used to protect/decorate the penis. I ma pretty sure it is a lagenaria species, probabaly siceraria (syn vulgaris), however I can't find any concrete information on this, let alone a source for the seed. So does anyone have access to such gourd seed (this variety only)? or can recommend a way of getting some (without hiking deep into Irian Jaya)? Also, while the penis is quite a sensitive part of the anatomy, I am surprised that gourd wearers seem to totally neglect their scrotum. In fact the gourd is tied around the back of the scrotum, which would be rather painful if you're running though the bush and get the gourd caught on something, thus ripping rather hard on your balls. Wouldn't a simple small round gourd do the trick? and it wouldn't even need string to hold it in place

Ed Dunkel Posted November 11, 2002 Torsten, Since you have a colection. Have you got the gourd that makes the really large, round fruits? They are good for making the Mbira sound bowls or just nice for a big bowl anyhow. (picture on theses pages: http://uweb.superlink.net/~rayash/mbira.htm http://www.bham.net/soe/stm/mbira.html http://www.mbira.org/) E D ps I'm sure you have been here already: http://webcom.com/jjmcclin/welcome.html
Torsten Posted November 12, 2002 didn't know about the Karimba, but that would certainly be a good one to grow. I've been looking mostly at the smaller utensil types, such as for drinking mate, making spoons, bottles, snuff boxes etc.
Torsten Posted November 12, 2002 Question is anwered. The Penis gourd is also known as the banana gourd (a form of L.siceraria) and apparently I already have this somewhere. The karimba appears to be simply a large hardshell (also L.siceraria). I appear to have this also.
