0 egad Posted October 6, 2006 (edited) hi girls just wondering if someone has a penetrating ID for these? i bought for $35 at my local walmart-type nursery Stateside. thanks for any help... Hey Rimbaud, i would suggest that they are fairly standard (whatever that means these days) trichocereus pachanois. Some close ups might help, but they look distinctly like several dozen trichocereus pachanoi sitting in my backyard, tho somewhat blue-er this could be from environmental/growing conditions, tho perhaps they are a cross of something. 0 _e_ Posted October 6, 2006 (edited) thats a farkn score! not so good on the i'ds but it doenst look like your run of the mill pachanoi, but i could be wrong. nice looking plant Edited October 6, 2006 by ({E})
0 PD. Posted October 6, 2006 i agree with the other guys, T. pach. nice buy for $35, the last tricho i purchased at a nursery was an unhealthy 4 foot bridgesii for $60. I just had to save it from a life of daily waterings, poor soil and limited lighting.
0 occidentalis Posted October 6, 2006 It's really glaucous and the indentation is a little bit interesting but apart from that I think it's a backeberg pachanoi. nice socks .
0 caludia Posted October 6, 2006 thanks for the help guys i figured it was pach but the glaucosity got me feverish so i thought i'd better ask. Yeah, not bad for $35... the tall half is 3 feet high. thanks for the acknowledgement of my socks too i do my very best to look hot, as many ppl know. Today i am at work on "casual friday" but the hint has already been dropped that i might be a bit "too casual" due to my sneakers being green from gardening (cos these grass species in america rub off on your clothes and make em green, it's outrageous!) but it's a nice day outside, a little chilly, but crisp and bright. i feel OK. 0 sobriquet Posted October 6, 2006 On a more serious note, my personal feeling about the glaucous aspect of Trichocereus is that it is a form of water proofing --- a waxy secretion that you'll notice is more able to resist water. Perhaps they produce this more in humid or wet environments as a defence. Just a hypothesis on my part.
0 mescalito Posted October 6, 2006 (edited) I'd actually suggest the opposite, as I reckon the thick skin slows transpiration in drier climates if they're watered via the root system regularly...just a theory Nice pick-up BTW Rimaud, though there's a blue tinge to the piccys so is this the true colour of your specie? I have a glaucous pach I picked up locally from a private nursery for 20 bucks that'd be at least 5 years old and we average around 30% R/H during spring! The people I purchased it from weren't that into cacti and watered it like the standard nursery plants thus my theory...maybe a genetic thing though MSSmith?? It was about the same size before I started cloning and hasn't been circulated here yet...Cuttings will be available in the near future though. (lick test is bitter as hell) I call him padre' and though the photo doesn't focus on him I'd like an ID on the little feller flowering beside him (sorry for the hijack ) Yes they've been through a hard time but bugger me they're hardy! 0 teonanacatl Posted October 6, 2006 glaucousness is likely a way of protecting the plant from high sun levels, it reflects the light most of mine get it around the young growth and it wears off on the old growth.
0 occidentalis Posted October 7, 2006 Mescalito, I think your little guys are Mammillaria. Maybe M. carmenae.

0 wisemonkey Posted October 13, 2006 I call him padre' and though the photo doesn't focus on him I'd like an ID on the little feller flowering beside him (sorry for the hijack ) I would say its Mammilaria elongata. Could be wrong but it looks very similar to mine
