argemona toxicity ?

Recommended Posts

hello

i am afraid that misinformation is the devil of internet.

when i read some website i found this information tongue.gifart to use for argemone is the latex of the pods.

when i was talking with sab people, i learnt that argemone pods could be very toxic and dangerous.

so i found a book of herbal medecine and read about the use of seeds.

does someone can give me a definitive information about the part to use and the toxicity of argemone?

thank you in advance.

there is a toxic alkaloid in this plant which is also in some other plant species and is known to cause problems. This is sanguinarine. In argemone mexicana it is mostly present in the seeds, but only in negligible traces in the rest of the plant. So the secret of using argemone is to harvest it before the seedpods fill up, or to remove the seedpods during harvest.

im not sure at what levels sanguinarine is toxic, but it seems that every now and then in india, argemone seeds are used as an adulterant for mustard seeds when producing mustard oil (for cooking), eventually causing toxic reactions..

here's a weird article http://members.tripod.com/~Prof_Anil_Aggra...l/poiso021.html
