Tougher penalties for Vic drivers on drugs

The Victorian Government plans to introduce tough new laws to crack down on people who drive while on drugs.

The legislation will be introduced into Parliament this week.

Police Minister Tim Holding says first-time offenders face a loss of licence and the maximum fine will be doubled to $12,00.

There will also be a significant increase in the jail term for those who are repeat offenders and increased penalties for those who refuse to be tested.

Mr Holding says it is important to get the message across.

"We have data which [shows] that something like a third of all drivers killed on Victorian roads have a drug other than alcohol in their system," he said.

"So we've got to keep pushing the message, getting the message through to motorists that this is an incredibly dangerous thing to do."

do u mean $12,000? or $1200? Also how long is the loss of licence for? And what constitutes drug driving? Dilated pupils? For example can someone take a low dose of LSD, then 10-12 hours later when they've come down off it and sobered up drive home without being guilty? These types of things have been puzzling me lately in regards to the new reign of Random drug testing being implemented on the roads.
