They look a bit nitrogen deficient. I'd repot in some fresh media, give them a feed but apart from that they're not too bad. I've seen far worse. The scarring is nothing to be too concerned about, it's just scars.

Growing Acacia Obtusifolia - Tips & Things to Avoid
Strontium Dawg replied to AKP's topic in Australian Native Plants
Everything sallubrious said. The only other tip I'd add is to give the edge of your seeds a light sanding with 200 grit paper until you get a spot showing the embryo (just). Then soak etc. -
Help with ID is this variegate a trich?
Strontium Dawg replied to godless's question in Cactus & Succulent Identification
I think it might be myrtillocactus geometrizans, but variegated. They get that red/maroon around the areoles when in full sun when they're young. Nice plant! -
Meet up: Sydney, Central Coast, Newcastle
Strontium Dawg replied to Neoshaman's topic in News & Notices
Yep definitely a place for enhanced enjoyment! I'm going to look up where my grandparents are in there, hopefully I can pay them a visit too. Also, "Save Sydney park" festival is on the same day if anyone is interested in kicking on afterwards, it's free. Where are we meeting at the necropolis? What time? -
I've found that cutting really plump hydrated plants often results in some black spots/weeping. Dry them out for a while before cutting then let the cut ends get some sun and wind for a few days. Sometimes they're just prone to black no matter what you do.

Horus it's not really a camping spot, it's a rocky gorge prone to flash floods. I'd love to take the crew on a daytrip though. I've got a few choice camp sites down the south coast if anyone is ever keen for a coastal camp.

Hi folks, It's been a particularly hectic and stressful week, and when I need to relax and recharge I like to go for a walk in the bush. Today I went to a special power place and spent some time meditating and soaking up the spring energy. This is my meditation place, surrounded by the sounds of babbling water, under the spreading dappled shade of a tristaniopsis laurina. My psychedelic batteries recharged, I went rockhopping. There are a lot of very special trees down here. And I'll admit, I thought I had them worked out but I really don't. Some are classic obtusifolia, some are clearly longifolia, and some blur the lines between the two. Some are getting ready to flower. Same tree setting seeds, I'll be back in a little while to collect some. Scale farmers. Other trees that are identical in many regards have just finished flowering through winter. I collected seeds from one of these a few years ago, a tree full of power and it's progeny are winter flowering and lean very much towards the longifolia side. The tenacity of these trees is amazing. They find homes in tiny cracks in solid rock, and cling on for dear life, under frequent siege from violent torrents of floodwater. And yet despite their ability to survive through everything nature can throw at them, they are so fragile. Acts of ignorance and vandalism, perpetrated by people who either don't know any better or just don't care are killing them. Caught in the act maybe, or just bitten off more than they could chew, they leave huge piles of bark scattered to decay, and the trees to die. If you know people who behave like this, please educate them, the trees deserve respect, and it's so unnecessary to strip trunk bark like this. It's just not OK. But this isn't meant to be a sad post, it's a good day so I'll leave you with some positive vibes. If you could see this place like I did today.... Peace to all. G.

The future of tricho breeding in Australia
Strontium Dawg replied to Halcyon Daze's topic in Cacti & Succulents
The f2 generation is moat likely where the really interesting hybrids will start to differentiate, if we can get someone to inbreed a cool hybrid then select special specimens...but it's a lifetime of work and we're just getting started! -
Glad we caught up nicsplash.

You know I'll be there, I met a member on the weekend that lives right near me so I'll try to bring him along. I'm hoping he comes along to the Sydney meet too.

rheumatoid help

http://www.merckmanuals.com/home/fundamentals/rehabilitation/treatment-of-pain-and-inflammation Most of this stuff applies to muscle injuries and inflammation, so take it with a grain of salt for degenerative conditions like rheumatoid arthritis I guess... -

Alcohol is notoriously bad for joint health, but much more so if you drink spirits, especially straight spirits. When I first gave up weed 10 years ago I was drinking a lot instead and my knees and ankles became very sore due to inflammation. Probably also exacerbated by a rapid increase in weight at the time as well. I went from barely 60kg to over 90kg in the space of a year. I learned a lot about managing inflammation when I took up long distance running. Cold showers and baths are awesome if you can get past the mental challenge. Even in the dead of winter I turn off the hot water after a short time and go cold for as long as I can. It really helps in my case, if yours is from r/a, I don't know if it will be as effective. -
Apparently my family tree is full of highwaymen and polygamists. But one of my ancestors came out on the Sirius as a midshipman. My next door neighbour has one of the cannons from the Sirius in his backyard. Another one of my ancestors was press ganged into the German navy, and he jumped overboard and swam ashore, he survived the bush and settled near Jervis Bay. Illegal immigrant before it was cool.

The future of tricho breeding in Australia
Strontium Dawg replied to Halcyon Daze's topic in Cacti & Succulents
I wonder the same. I think it's definitely a good time for new crosses, there's so many people distributing seeds. What will happen to them all? I'd say a lot will fall to neglect eventually. I mean they take up a lot of space once they get past the first year or two. I'm trying to put as many as I can in the ground so that they establish themselves into mature plants. Hopefully they'll still be around after I'm gone. But I fear that's improbable. People seem more interested in redevelopment so older houses and blocks get bulldozed to make way for modern buildings. People like spooge who are mass planting them are the future Fields/cactus country maybe? -
