I ordered it last year from cactuslands, the picture of it is still up on their oddities page towards the bottom actually. I am not sure of it's specific variety just going off what it was sold to me as

This is my only one, an Ariocarpus retusus v furfuraceus. It's a bit bigger than this picture but was the most recent one I had.

Pot size for mother plants / in ground spacing
djmattz0r replied to magical9's topic in Cacti & Succulents
You'd probably see better growth if you can plant them in the ground if your climate allows. If you needed to do pots I would say somewhere between 3 and 5 gallon pots so they have a nice root mass to grow off. 1 stump per square foot will be tight but I'd assume it would be fine if you are keeping it pruned. I have my cacti planted about that close but some of the ones I plan on flowering I will probably have to move from the others. Only time will tell... Good luck, that's a lot of stumps! -
I have some of these seeds, guess I will sow them and see what happens..

Question about rooting stumps and pupping
djmattz0r replied to magical9's topic in Cacti & Succulents
a 400w HPS would probably be enough light but a MH would be better for keeping cacti growing and limit etiolation. -
I had good luck rooting in a box that reaches 100+ F and 10k lumens just kinda dehydrating them until they were forced to throw roots, cruel I know but it worked. Actually lost some that I was trying to root just indoors and eventually died to random problems being indoors

The 2" square pots just fit so well into those large propagators that hold the cells. I recently got a hold of a bunch of 4" round plastic pots that were going to be thrown away so I threw em in my trunk. It's a big crate full so probably a few hundred easy (if anyone in the US needs some pots lemme know )

This is how I keep birds away from my garden, it's lame but was something I had laying around already (strange yes I know) I used to have birds eating my berries, no problems since incorporating this fella though. I realized I had sunburned one side of the TBM clone-A graft I had after moving it to receive more light so quickly moved it back into less light to hopefully recover. It's raining so hopefully all the grafts that are getting wet won't rot. Here's a few pictures. The damage from the toothpicks used to hold the scion down seems legit New seedling graft on the pere tree I had, cut off all the new growth and grafted this onto one of the branches. Not sure what either of these are but my guess is the larger scion is a Validus and the smaller still unsure. Both were random seedlings I found in small pots that I decided to graft. Also think I finally got this to take, first time I didn't use enough pressure and half of it dried and the vascular tissue never joined. Melted wax growth starting on a bridgesii This graft shooting out a ton of rootlets, not sure if I want to degraft just yet but I think the button would appreciate it

Question about rooting stumps and pupping
djmattz0r replied to magical9's topic in Cacti & Succulents
Yes you can keep a cactus growing through winter with something like that, but some people say you should allow a cactus to go through it's dormancy phase. I figure some climates keep cacti growing year round because of warm temperatures though so I don't see why it would NEED it. -
Those 2" pots are nice looking, I have found the occasional 2"er with really nice drainage but only randomly and never online so I can only pick up a few here and there. Seedlings looking good too~!

Great looking plant! I just sowed a few of my seeds I had sitting around and have had 1 pop up so far, any idea on germination time or germ rate of older seed? My camera does the same thing, depending on what is going on in the image they sometimes exceed 2 MB so I right click the picture and edit then you should be able to resize from there (hopefully). I usually just scale it down a few %... If there's an easier way to do this somebody please chime in

Question about rooting stumps and pupping
djmattz0r replied to magical9's topic in Cacti & Succulents
I would recommend using BAP only once the stumps are rooted, and only BAP 1-2 aeroles per cactus or else you risk stalling them pretty bad. All of my cacti that I applied BAP to last year are just finally pupping after just sitting for months and months, I used way too much and on too many aeroles so it was super slow and not sure how a pup with pups coming off of it will turn out -
Question about rooting stumps and pupping
djmattz0r replied to magical9's topic in Cacti & Succulents
I have had stumps pup before rooting and vise versa, depends on how much water is stored I'd guess. Size of the stumps is another factor, larger cuts grow more/faster than small pieces. I would think that you'll have roots and pups before next season easily. Nice stumpage by the way -
That could be interesting, might just be able to wrap it all the way around the pot if using nylons since they are long and stretchy. But sticking it onto spines could work too. I learned the kite twine method from a thai grafting video, it really helps to keep a scion placed where you want and prevent it from shifting when under pressure but I have found a rubber band or something to provide pressure is needed for larger scions. I figured there was a better way to do it but I wasn't really thinking.. Seems to have worked well though and are still applying generous pressure. I did sterilize the toothpicks with iso before I inserted them into the stock

I was gifted this lovely Terscheckii pup, nice and fat Also was given a T. spachianus pup and a Flying Saucer pup, been wanting these for a while and they found me
-
I definitely used too much BAP when I first got it, it appears some of the pups have started to pup too. Not sure what will happen with these Here's another couple of pictures of that fat impale graft. I was thinking about letting the biggest pup get a little bigger then trying to graft it on to a PC pedro TBM clone-A chunk I grafted sideways, really hope this one took. It already has a spider protecting it And a picture of the variegated button I saved from a rotting stock. I put it on to one of my bigger stocks so used tooth picks to get the rubber band to work.
-
Noticed this little flower bud forming today, I believe it will be the first flower I have seen from this graft as it was originally a root rot rescue and has finally started taking off after being re-potted.
-
I have had the problem with trich cuttings shooting roots and knocking themselves over before. You can use rocks to hold them in place better, or bury them deeper, or just place them back in the soil if they do.
-
All of those tricho babies look very nice Found some rot on a variegated scion/stock so I grafted 2 pups just in case it spread and I lost the whole graft. A couple days later Unfortunately after a couple days it seems to have spread slightly, engulfing the small pups that were in the first picture. So the main button was re-grafted to a large PC pachanoi. It is held in place with kite twine and then a rubber band held in place with 2 toothpicks stuck into the stock. I hope I got all the infection cut away but I am pretty sure the other 2 took with some luck so not all my eggs in one basket

What would you call these?
djmattz0r replied to M S Smith's question in Cactus & Succulent Identification
Thanks for clearing that up, must have read it before it had gotten fixed -
That makes sense, I was wondering about the spines..

Snagged this lil fella yesterday: I believe it to be a Astrophytum Myriostigma cv FUKURYU Not sure exactly what it is but I was told it was FUKURYU at least, if anyone knows more about the specific cultivars please enlighten me [edit: spelling]

Predominant Cultivar, it's basically what's bought at box stores in the US as San Pedro. There's discussions on what the actual lineage of the clone came from but I think it was collected by Backberg long ago in South America
