    Anxiety/Panic Attacks

Also, check the TED video where she gives a talk about it: http://www.ted.com/t...of_insight.html YouTube version: Damn I can't remember how to make the video in the post thingo! botanika makes an important point: everyone has anxiety, it is a normal and healthy part of life. BUT some people do suffer from anxiety and panic disorders, and it is a very real mental illness just like depression or bipolar. Like most mental illnesses, people who don't have it often denigrate the experience of those who do. However, going out and meeting women might work for some people's anxiety, but not for others. For instance if someone has social anxiety it would probably be a disaster that would only create more anxiety: NOT because the person is creating it for themselves (except in the sense they bit off more than they could chew), but because they have an anxiety disorder.. Unless they recognize their problem and take it slowly and gradually, one step at a time. Flooding yourself with the stimuli that make you anxious is an outmoded concept that has been shown to have only limited effectiveness compared to graduated exposure to feared situations. Everyone's situation and fears are different, so giving specific advice is kind of pointless, much better to stick with general principles and thought exercises that apply across different situations.
  4. Same as it's always been. Culture is just a reflection of ourselves. People create culture, then culture creates people, in an endless cycle. For instance: the reason those music videos mention clubbing and drinking or getting wasted? That's what heaps of people do! So they sing songs about it, make videos about it and watch those videos. The vast majority of people are not deep thinkers, and never will be. It's no use trying to use rational arguments to convince irrational people, and there's no use trying to promote thinking to people who hate being left alone with their own thoughts.
  5. "Shooby dooby doo wop, it's all around you, shooby dooby doo wop, the music that surrounds you" I mostly agree with qualia: these corporations are just giving people what they want. It's like a church: the pastor tells people what they want to hear because if he didn't they would go somewhere else. The people and their leaders are equally to blame.

    Anxiety/Panic Attacks

It's not always only a matter of perception, panic disorder can have a physical basis. You are feeling fine and enjoying yourself and not even particularly stressed and then you get a huge surge of adrenaline and sense of impending doom that seems to come out of nowhere. Looking objectively though there are almost always stressors that could be related, even if they are far from worrying you on a conscious level. For you the break up of a long term relationship, new job and health concerns all sound like obvious vectors of stress. Going to bed early and lyring in the dark with this stuff swirling around in your head it's not surprising you felt anxious. As space cadet points out though, at the root of anxiety and panic issues is often a fear of not being in control, but also can be fear of abandonment, of inadequacy, or of course just plain fear of death. CBT and mindfulness meditation is good: think about your thinking, and keep track of what is going through your mind around the time of panic attacks so you can see what your body is alerting you to. Try and let your thoughts just happen without judging them or yourself. Jox and niggles seem to be talking about similar stuff: engaging your prefrontal cortex by talking yourself down with rational thoughts internally can also work wonders when your brain is highjacked by your amygdala. Do some moderate exercise, avoid caffeine and other stimulants. When you begin to realize what it is at the root of your own anxiety, you may need to make life changes to remove certain stresses that you are currently unable to cope with, but even just knowing "oh right X happened so now I feel Y" can be a great help when panic strikes. When the panic does hit, the best thing is just try and ride it out, don't resist or get up and start pacing etc. Recognize that you are having a panic attack and try and get into a frame of mind where you say: "ok so I will panic now, big deal" and laugh at yourself and your inner voice of panic. Recognize that you feel uncomfortable, but that it is okay to feel that way. Try and stay seated and calm and keep your breathing under control and remember that it will pass before long, like it always does. Doing what the panic wants you to do is a sure way to keep it happening, but if you practice calmly accepting what is happening in your thoughts and body without reacting or judging you will notice less panic attacks, shorter panic attacks and more of a tolerance for panic attacks.. leaving your more mental space to work on the underlying issues that are triggering anxiety and panic. Good luck man, I have a panic disorder and have worked hard on overcoming it for years now, it's not something many other people readily understand, so feel free to pm anytime you want to chat about it. Now I sometimes still have panic if I am in a situation likely to trigger it, but instead of freaking out I just sit there and ride it out and carry on with what I am doing and mostly people around me don't even realize anything is happening. It's quire an empowering feeling when part of your brain is telling you you are surely going to die at any minute but another part of your brain is laughing while you sit there calmly and carry on small talk with someone who is completely oblivious to what is going on inisde you.

    not entirely female

I thought this was a post about incognito at first.
  9. I was going to say the same thing blunt: if it's at the top, people might miss it but they'll be all "doh" when it's shown to them. Also, I think we skip the stickies because we've been here a while? When I go to a new forum, I almost always read the "READ BEFORE POSTING" stuff, as different forums often have quite different expectations.
  10. I agree there is not enough notifcation of forum rules. I've often thought there should be a sticky in cactus, mycology, lab forums at the top saying READ BEFORE POSTING or something, instead of the tiny little Posting Rules hidden down the bottom where no one will see it. Some explication of what kinds of things are self-incriminating would be good too.

    Meet up: Perth

I'll be there with pup in tow if I get out of bed in time.
  12. But how often does this happen from an internet post, however incriminating, in practice? Surely the police would have to know who wrote the post, so what is the link between them reading an internet post and then knocking on your door? I totally agree about people not incriminating themselves online, and ideally not doing anything illegal in the first place. It seems like people write some pretty blatantly illegal stuff, especially on other forums, but they only seem to get raided or arrested for stuff they have done offline. I'm sure there must be cases where it has happened, I just don't know of any or how common it is, or how they would be traced.

  15. Cannabis use at any age causes changes in brain chemistry, and heavy use during adolescence is almost certainly not a good idea. But correlation does not equal causation. One issue to consider is that adolescents who are using Cannabis at a young age are more than likely to come from a situation that predisposed them to mental health issues later in life anyway. But the strongest evidence against any causative link is the simple fact that if Cannabis use caused schizophrenia, there should be an increase in the incidence of schizophrenia in times/places where there is an increase in the use of Cannabis, but statistics show there is not. The incidence of schizophrenia remains stable at roughly 1% percent of the population between cultures and throughout history, regardless of differences in Cannabis use. For example: Source: http://www.abc.net.au/science/articles/2009/09/01/2673334.htm No doubt, Cannabis can trigger an early psychotic episode in those who already have a genetic predisposition to schizophrenia, but this is not causation, but uncovering of a latent mental illness that almost certainly would have occurred at some point regardless of Cannabis use.

POLL: How should Rumple/Chef redeem himself.

BOP, even if he does have cancer there is nothing wrong with people being suspicious. If it is true and his attitude has really changed he shouldn't mind being questioned, since he's so remorseful and sorry and everything. He doesn't sound remorseful, he sounds like he's manipulated a bunch of well-meaning naive folk into feeling sorry for him and accepting his pathologically deceitful behavior on the off chance one of the sob stories he has spun is true. _______________________ Chef you are hardly in a position to be telling people how they should react to your deceit. A day or two ago you were meoldramatically acting repentant and saying you would understand if people were angry, did not expect them to forgive you and you would leave the forums etc but then when people are angry you get on your high horse and tell them to stfu! Your behavior is so textbook trollish I am amazed at how many people are being sucked in by it... your fucking avatar is actually a troll ffs. I don't know if you are a pathological liar, have Munchausen syndrome or are just a garden variety internet troll, but it stinks. In any of these cases you have my sympathy for your mental illness but that doesn't mean I'm going to play your game like so many others here seem so ready to do. If you do have cancer I have absolutely no qualms about being suspicious that you don't, it's not that I am an uncaring arsehole, it's that your behavior, which you were supposedly sorry about, has eroded any trust that existed and made me very suspicious. The fact you don't seem to understand this or show any true remorse and get offended and indignant at those who don't trust you only confirms my suspicions. Be sure of one thing: the truth makes fools of us all. *edit* It should be easy for you to prove you have a terminal illness, you have already told us your real first name, so just upload a few recent scans of your many medical diagnostic and treatment documents with your last name blacked out. Some from when you were 11 would be good too. This should be really easy for you if your claims are true and would go a long way to repairing the trust you have broken. dc was killed in a traffic accident

I think you're right Torsten, but actually I was being a bit sarcastic and saying that people die in rl too. I was thinking it maybe just seems like more people die here because I interneteract with more people here than in rl. In reality, lots of people have been dying or falling seriously ill in rl as well, so it could just be a facet of growing old(er). Like it says in the movies: "On a long enough time line the survival rate for everyone drops to zero" —Tyler Durden It's fucked up though, I liked the little of dc I saw, he was funny.

    Cyrenian House/Farm - Perth

The green pack? Ours are greenish: 25mg tablets which I've been chopping into quarters and taking two to four quarters a day PRN. I haven't noticed any diminishing effect with the anti-emesis and I imagine the tolerance would be with the sedating/hypnotic side effects and not the anti-emesis and anti-histamine actions?

I think therefore was just joking. Weed can definitely be addictive. Don't be scared of pharms OP, they can work wonders if used wisely. Hey my latest discovery for nausea: low dose phenergan (otc too) ... works as a sleep aid, mild sedative too

    Rumple Foreskin & Chef...

Weird. I wondered what had happened to Chef and who this Rumple Foreskin character was. I am left wondering whether Cameron really does have cancer, or if that is all part of the deception. It seems to me that these kind of behaviors on forums often go hand in hand with drama and tall stories to elicit attention and sympathy. I noticed RumpleForeskin posting all these enigmatic "look at me" comments hinting he was going to die soon in chat the other night and thought "who is this fucker and why is he so desperately trying to get attention?" Anyway, I am very suspicious and I think others should be too until a disinterested third party confirms that he really has cancer and the prognosis is as bad as he says it is.
  24. Political establishment and not human beings? How is the political establishment not human?
  25. Wrong. Easter has nothing to do with Ishtar, or war. The name Easter is derived from the name of the goddess Eostre, who has nothing to do with war, but is a fertility goddess. It's disturbing that a self-proclaimed enlightened one glorifies and worships war. Using Hindu deities to support your warmongering is inane, the Hindus grew out of that shit millennia ago: get with the program. I remember when psychedelics used to turn people on to peace and counterculturalism and stuff, not war and jingoism.
