mud Posted March 9, 2012 This is gonna be a ridiculous season. Early, and long... and large! The urban microclimate looks to be holding great promise also. Foaf's lost many spore prints all around the territory. Hunting for photos will be like looking for Easter eggs this year. They could be anywhere.

mud Posted March 10, 2012 Dragons hoard gold, right : ) Wouldn't it be exciting if cyans, azures or ovoids got to springing up too? Spose now would be the time to consider such possibilities..
Zen Peddler Posted March 10, 2012 The ones in melb didnt until mid June Went to a local spot where there was shite loads last few years (and where I swear I saw Alex Pappis hunting) and there were none. So Adam must have been a freak. Seen a few of those little red shrooms and some earthstars about - and my find of Saffrons in a thick pine plantation. Mycelia Posted March 12, 2012 Looking forward to the start of the season. Went for a walk to my usual spots this weekend hoping with the rain something may have been there but nothing yet. Saw a few other species around but no subs.
Shroomeup Posted March 12, 2012 Stumbled across a few subs in some very dry forest walking the dogs. A couple were mature so it seems the season has finally started here too! I apologize for the lack of habitat shots, I didn't have a camera at the time. I'd very careful with them mate, they dont look like subs to me. I believe they could be hypholoma fasciculare. theuserformallyknownasd00d Posted March 14, 2012 Temps around my area (southern highlands/wollongong) are dropping this week yeeeew. Been between 13-18'C at nights and way to warm. Hittin 10'C in belango next tues so planning a trip up there Wednesday for a scout, the sillysimon spirit will even provide rain during the temp drop according to the forecast so fingers crossed. I'm heading there this w.e for milkcaps so will make sure to suss a few good native spots along the way. Anybody keen to tag along let me know. I'm new to this area but worked the game out down in the riverina last season so hopefully my technique has transferred up here!

vual Posted March 14, 2012 (edited) Been wondering that too, I've got a whole bunch of those. Agaric of some kind..... "Russula persanguinea" i reckon, was it fragile? dosnt look fragile in the picture, normaly the cap is about 5cm, this looks like a large one, maybe im wrong, found under a gumtree? Field compainnion to Australian Fungi - Bruce FuhrerPage 74 "Russula persanguinea", spores white(Mag x1) "...is commonaly a small species 4 to 5cm" accross the bright red caps, although specimens teice the size man be found. This is a very fragile fungus, often breaking when handled or crumbling when carried if not carfuly protected" Russula persanguinea is mychorrhizal with eucalypt roots and is found in wetter areas of eastern states of Australia, as well as Western Australia. It can be found fruiting at the base of live eucalypts, on the ground where there is buried wood, as well as around the base of dead eucalypt stumps. I am led to believe that it is the only species of Russula that fruits on dead wood, but I have not substantiated this. - http://australianfungi.blogspot.com.au/2011/06/57-russula-persanguinea.html Edited March 14, 2012 by vual
