Sola Posted May 11, 2011 (edited) I fold an old towel over many times and pick it up with no trouble, but nothing is fool proof, you always get at least one. And yes, I still use gloves with this method Edited May 14, 2011 by Sola
Foo Posted May 11, 2011 Gloves? Allso i tend to cut boxes open at the edges so i have my cuts on a flatter surface for handling (when rec in the post)
tripsis Posted May 12, 2011 I never wear gloves. Cop a few spines, but not too many. A feed stock bag or anything similar works well. Just flatten it, wrap it around the stem and hold onto the bag. As for packaging, make a tube out of cardboard a little larger than the diameter of the cactus, then slip in over the column in the same direction as the main central spines or the direction that the majority of the spines are pointing. Doing this reduces the possibility of the spines sticking through the cardboard and causing injury, while keeping the spines intact (far more aesthetically pleasing than trimmed spines) and makes it pretty straightforward packing large/spiny cuttings. DuG Posted May 12, 2011 gloves are good but they don't stop all the spines. I wrap the cactus in crumpled newspaper, packing more around stems/joins, then wrap more newspaper and into the box. copped a big splinter in the finger last time about 8mm. That was painful. I use a towel to move the big cactus around, especially usefull when they weigh a few kilo's
