Mutant, have you suddenly developed a rare form of OCD which urgently requires knowledge of the top three things in every category? triquetragnosis? Films, philosophers and problems I can see the impetus, but animals (cute) and colours are just a little perplexing. I feel like you're up to something..

    What's the TOP #3 animals?

    1. Lynx, cause they scale cacti for ultimate vantage point, and those pointy ears... 2. Tie between dolphins&whales...the stewards of our world methinks 3. Cuttle fish! Extreme intelligence.. and they change colour to express how they feel, I mean c'mon.. That's awesome. But so are chameleons.. Idk now. It's hard to choose just 3. Bower birds are pretty choice as well, so creative..

What's the TOP #3 problems of the world

Just a rough, uncoffee'd, not well considered attempt but I'm inclined to say (aside from your quite evident top three mutant) 1. The education paradigm. Separate young children from their parents for extended periods of brain sculpting from the earliest age possible and continually reinforce the necessity of becoming something that your culture approves of rather than being who you are and learning from those who made you and truly have your best interests at heart. 2. Over stimulation. Continual bombardment by media, too many choices which inhibit our ability to separate the wheat from the chaff and choose what is actually meaningful/beneficial. The relegation of consciousness exploration to an esoteric fringe-element, rather than having any kind of respectable standing or priority in education. The glorification of unconsciousness. 3. Food that is not food. GE and nutritionally devoid 'stuff' which we put into our bodies which creates the illusion of having consumed some kind of fuel, when so often this 'stuff' does little but trick us and make us sick. Sort of connected also is the medication without consent issue. Here we have industrial toxic waste (fluoride) administered to the town water supply, which is medication without consent, something a doctor would be unable to do to one patient, yet city councils can unleash on a whole population.

  5. Some long overdue pics.. The meagre quantities of warmth and sunlight these have received mean that growth has been slow, showing the pitfalls of growing in a not so ideal climate. But at least they are tough! Here's my favourite crest, just cause it is the cutest little plant I have ever laid eyes on TPQC x TPM SS01 x TPM (from the 2011 batch but I may as well include here) Unsure of this one's identity...sadly I thought I would remember well enough not to need labels..fail. Quotes of the day.

"A mujaheddin fighter once told me that fate give us all three teachers, three friends, three enemies and three great loves in our lives. But these twelve are always disguised, and we can never know which one is which until we've loved them, left them or fought them." Shantaram - Gregory David Roberts

    Veterinarian advice required. "Feline".

I'm no vet but devote much time to the study of cats...mostly my own feline companion... And she too has the vacuum cleaner phobia. Her reaction to it has always been so dramatic that I initially thought an old flatmate had sucked her fur with one, but over time I have come to suspect that vacuum cleaners could make a very high or very low frequency sound which is beyond our spectrum of hearing but extremely disturbing to cats. My approach is now to usher the furry-queen outdoors before vacuuming or just using a broom and stick to sweeping when she is about. Occasionally in the past I would offer my cat some catnip or valerian in times where she was obiviously experiencing anxiety and discomfort but I found that sometimes it would just wig her out even more, they are sensitive wee things and like us, probably benefit from being in a good state before consuming consciousness-altering herbs. Maybe it could be worth giving rescue remedy a try if you're still looking for solutions in a few weeks? There's a type made especially for animals, and we've used it with equal success calming both cats and horses before vet visits. http://www.preciouspets.org/rescue-remedy-for-dogs-and-cats/

    SS01 X TPM grow log

Ta I think I got about 10 seeds originally, a few germinated but only 2 survived the first year. Southern nz can be very cold and not always the most favourable of cacti-growing climates, so progress is slow at times. Seems I can only locate one of my two now... This one must be what..two..no ..three years old? It grew very slowly at first, and was only grafted a year after it was born, I had intended to keep on its own roots but being my first seed grown crest I decided grafting on a small seed grown pach was necessary when it shrunk a little approaching winter. Now it has just caught up to the other batch of nitrogen mutants which are a year younger. I will propagate it in the coming spring/summer.

    Animals taking psychoactive plants

^ Just like dobby! I'm sure there must be another thread somewhere on the subject, as I remember posting this vid to it, and seeing a lot more examples. Will have a hunt around and see if I can find it. The jaguars eating caapi has been most impressive to me. Makes a heck load of sense too. Funniest example I've personally seen of animals taking psychoactive plants was when my cat became obsessed with a particular garden bed and used to spend ages rolling around in the dirt and then eating what I thought at the time were little clumps of dirt. Later I realised that was where I had grown valerian and she was actually digging up little left over pieces of the roots which had snapped off.

self fertile T. Spachianus. your experiences...

I collected my first lot of trich seeds off a old spach down the road from my old house. At the right time it would have 5-10 fruit ripening at once, but this is usually in autumn after flowering, not consistently throughout the year. Perhaps in warmer climates they could. Heeeeaps of seeds per pod. I only took two pods and that was undoubtedly several hundred seeds. As far as I have heard, yeah spachianus seems to be the only self fertile trichocereus. Hope there are others tho.

    Garden insect ID thread

Hey all, thought it would be good to have a general insect identification thread where we can all seek ID's for the creepy crawlies we find in our ethnobotanical gardens. Hopefully over time this thread could become a reference point so we can all get more familiar with garden insects. Sort your friends from your foes here. A couple of examples... Just found out the identity of this little dude today, many thanks to Tripsis Friend: Brown lacewing - Hemerobiidae. "Hemerobiids, like chrysopids, are predatory, especially on aphids, both as larvae and adults" So I'm quite happy to see them in the greenhouse Foe: Prominent damaged caused by (i'm pretty sure anyway) Asian Citris psyllids on a peach tree.. No sign of the offender, I got told its really really small. Sooo yeh! Feel free to bring your bug ID requests here and hopefully over time we will build up a pretty comprehensive set of garden insect IDs
  24. Seeking ideas and input on the realms of education, namely what is missing, what is damning and what could and should be done much better? I'm interested in alternative education and am seeking input and ideas towards improving and advancing the provision of education for little people. I'd like to broaden my knowledge base of the issues faced and agonies experienced by children and their families within mainstream education, and primarily develop a clearer perspective of what priorities should take precedence. If you have children, might like to one day, or simply have been a child - what are the main focal points you would prioritise in education? This can be big or small, ethical and philosophical or practical and definitive. Thanks!
