    Harvest Ethics

Whenever I go seed collecting, I always try to take a few pods only from the largest number of trees to maximise diversity that I distribute. But I'd argue that it's still better to propagate from a single tree than to let a local population die out entirely. Between bark rippers, drought, council boom sprayers, fires and land clearing, I'm seeing a lot of my local trees dying and not being replaced. I've taken on the task of replanting back into the area to help them out.

The "dam the flow, wait for pressure to build to rupture point, then release" technique is always a winner in this game...

Is this site dying out ?

I like to mess with their data collection algorithms. I click on random links I have zero interest in and have opposing views on. I do Google searches for bizarre then extremely mainstream topics. I like to keep them all on their toes!

How old can a cactus be to take a cutting?

The smaller the cut, the slower it will grow. They get stunted and take ages to really fatten up. Big cut often take forever to root though, I think because they have plenty of reserves they aren't desperate to get roots out. Big cuts of terscheckii and Validus for example can take years to root.

Advice for a Short Visit DownUnder?

It's a fair way out of Melbourne but Cactus Country in Strathmerton Victoria is worth going out of your way for. In Sydney, the Royal National Park and the Blue Mountains are pretty great places to visit. The hinterland of the Gold Coast is nice too, probably a little late by April to see any mushrooms though.

  14. Sorry infinity, I didn't mean to piss on your sale post, that was bad form. Is this seed from plants grown by you? If so that's pretty cool, most people struggle to grow it. I have a local supply as I said above so that price is a bit steep for me, but it might be fine for someone else who can't get it in bulk.

    Potting Mix

Are you sure that is zeolite? Generally kittly litter is bentonite clay which turns into a claggy mess when wet (so you can scoop out the poops and wizz from the dry material). I might have to go check it out. Zeolite is quite heavy so it should be fairly easy to tell just by picking up a bag on the shelf.

    New Free Trade Thread?

It all sounds good. A lot more work to police it than previous attempts though. And no, I don't believe a non moderator can delete posts other than those made by themself. The trades have always been my favourite part of this community.

    Noob's cacti

The only problem with spaces maintained by councis is that they are very risk averse. If they see a spiky cactus they'll most likely chop it to avoid someone getting injured who might sue them. If you can find public land that is basically abandoned that should work. There's a reserve near me that's very steep, bordered by main roads with no footpath access. The council don't mow it or spray for weeds as it's too hard to get access. I'll fill it up with cactus and acacias and see what happens in a few years. The only problem I forsee are feral deer. They are ravenous. I've planted trichos in the bush and they have eaten them to the ground. Might need to put up some mesh fences until they're big enough to hold their own.

    Noob's cacti

Repotting cactus sucks! Haha. I'm on a mission to get everything into the ground. I only have so much space so I'm farming them out to friends, family and neighbours. I'm even "appropriating" public reserves. Cactus all deserve to be in the ground so they can grow properly. I'm sick of mowing my lawn anyway so it's getting dug up bit by bit and replaced with more useful beds!

    PTSD 2018

This may not be helpful but maybe it will be. A few years ago I went through the worst period of my life, I won't go into the details, it's not important anyway. Two things helped me more than anything else. 1. Everything that happens to you while you are alive is your responsibility. Maybe you didn't cause the things to happen, but whatever happens is your responsibility to deal with, and you have to take responsibility for it in order to deal with it. 2. You're going to die. We're all going to die. We are meant to die. There's no avoiding it. Once you fully comprehend this, your problems may not feel so big. I actually take a lot of comfort in this fact and it brings me peace to know that one day I most likely won't even be remembered at all. That's pretty blunt I know. There's a good book that I recommend: "Fear" by Buddhist monk Thich Nhat Than. It's full of gentle advice that may help you with your PTSD. It teaches you that your worries and fears are not to be avoided, you talk to them and tell them that you will look after them and give them love, after all they are a part of you like all the other parts.

    Passiflora to help a friend

Mixing the two won't do much serious harm (most likely) but what's the point of taking harmalas if you don't stop the booze? Alcohol dulls the edges of everything.
