Good advice for everyone. that's why I'm asking as many questions as I am so I can improve their living conditions in as few chess moves as possible. I don't worry about them too much, they've taught me how hardy they are. But I do enjoy looking at them every day. The photo might not show it, but there's a rib of pink just down the middle of each petal. Now that the flower is closed, it's much more obvious how much pink there is in them. Sorry, no picture.

What's going on with this guy? What am I doing wrong? Here are a few shots of my current group of friends. Some on own roots, some grafted Here are my Trich grafted monsters. I pulled a couple of pups off the one on the left, looking to root them once calloused. I think I might have two flowers on the way! I'm planning on repotting most of these guys because it's been a couple of years for some of them, and I've learned quite a bit more since potting them originally. As you see a bunch of my guys are standing up and out quite a bit. When I repot them should I bury them a bit more? Or is there a problem one could diagnose from such growth behavior? My plan is to use better sifted soil, some crushed local sandstone—pieces and grit for drainage—plus some DE. Some percentage of the old potting mix will be recycled into the mix as well, for probiotics and whatnot. Almost all of them get watered once a month in the hot dry months (38-45°C, 2-15% humidity) and not at all once the temp drops below 10°, except the one grafted on the Harrisia, I know those aren't as drought or heat tolerant. It almost looks like he might throw out a flower as well, I'll be watching closely the next week or so. I tend to think I'm mild on the nutrients, using fish based stuff every other month or so. I appreciate the help and wisdom of this forum immensely.

Alright I've moved them to a spot that is stronger filtered light til noon, then full sun for a few hours, then tree shaded as the sun sets. I'm thinking to leave them there for a week before moving them into full sun throughout the middle of the day. I didn't realize, aside from morning sun, how much shade they were actually living in. How long should I watch them to tell if the adjustment is enough? I check them every day, mostly because of my first ever flower (yay!). Maybe it's my imagination, but the growing edge does seem to be retreating a bit on all of them, if that makes sense. As for the flower, I saved some pollen on a Q tip when it opened. The other flower looks a week out; does it matter if I cross flowers on the same plant or should I wait for the Harrisia graft to flower? That one looks 2 weeks out. Pardon the pic, still overcast.

Ok so light is the issue. Granted, today is the one of a dozen overcast days during the summer, but this spot is indirect sun from about noon on. Maybe I'll move them to the other side of the porch where they get sun from noon til sundown?

I've made my own simple lip balm before using different herbals. I wonder what a lip balm with this stuff would be like. From what I've read you can also make a tea out of it, so I'm leaning towards this stuff is water soluble. Experimenting...

sorry to resurrect an old thread, but a seller on eBay sent me one of these plants instead of Silene Capensis. took me a while to figure out what it is exactly. now I too enjoy giving leaves to friends from time to time. you guys eat the flowers too? any preparation/recipes to share?

I've had this LW for several years now, and several months back moved it from a Peres stock to this Harrisia stock. However in the past few days the yellowing has been growing, indicating possible root rot? It isn't soft, it's dry and hard actually. The scion feels firm. I suspect it was a combination of water and outdoor temperature, a mistake on my part. Should I degraft it to save the scion? I could either root it on it's own, or I have some Pachanoi to regraft to, with some more Harrisia on the way as well.

thanks again for the help, I regrafted onto different stock and it's coasting along quite nice. As for my rooted friends: what does it mean when the plant is growing out of the soil? It's like it's pushing itself out of the ground from the bottom, but appears to be otherwise healthy.

Alright I lopped it off, left an areole or two just in case, and stuck on some 8 rib Pachanoi recently rooted in a pot. Let's hope it takes.

Thanks I will do. It gets a bit of direct sun then mostly filtered through pine needles for the afternoon, in the same spot as my other trichs. Hopefully this is better than where it was located before. It is getting cooler at night, perhaps growth will slow down a bit.

I received this lovely grafted Willie 7 months ago now. It seems to be doing very well, I have learned to tell when it wants water by look and sometimes by feel, and it seems to have developed nicely. But now I'm wondering if I should degraft it and root on its own, or regraft onto a trichocereus. Which brings me to my second photo. I've had this baby Pachanoi for the same amount of time and it hasn't done much of anything until recently. As you can see the tip has narrowed down and to my novice eyes probably wants a bigger home. However, I'm wondering if its diminutive tip might be prime real-estate for grafting the previously mentioned Willie. sorry, having difficulty with attachments.

I've decided to leave the Loph in the OP on the Peres for now. If it starts to grow down around the peres stalk much more I will degraft and either root it or put it on a nice Blue Myrtle I have rocking, or a Harrisia jusbertii I just found. I took the plunge on one of my other Lophs, removed him from the peres and put him on the midget Trich above in the OP. It threw up serious growth since then so I thought it a fine candidate. I did this 3 days ago and already there's the slight bright green color of new growth. I hope that means I did well! I left several areoles worth on the peres graft so hopefully we'll see a pup or two. How should one winter Lophs on peres? My intuition tells me to treat it like a semi tropical cactus and bring it inside to protect from frost. It doesn't frost often and I know any well established Trichs are probably fine, but I was considering building a mini green house for my little Loph on Peres community out of PVC and plastic sheeting, something small around 50cm cubed. The days are getting shorter now. We're still reaching +/- 35°C during the day but are dipping down past the 20's °C at night so I might not be watering my cactus too much longer. We don't have much of a fall period, it will soon be bone dry cold winter. I should probably also figure out what I'm going to do soon.

I like this idea a lot, so I think I will just sit and wait. Maybe slip the loph some coconut milk on rare occasions to encourage pupping. Thanks! One thing I noticed though: the graft is getting bigger, are there any signs I should look out for that the loph is getting too big for the peres?

Should I pot the mini pachanoi into a larger home first or is that pot sufficient for loph stock? Also, the two pups that are growing out of the pachanoi on the left, could I hypothetically graft onto one of those? I guess I'm just having a hard time deciding whether to graft or root my Lophophora. Any thoughts?

Hey everybody. Thought i'd throw out a request for some seeds or cuttings for some plants I'm interested in. I'm the US and getting mail from OZ has been patchy, perhaps there are friends nearby by who could help me out. Perhaps I'll just keep this as a running thread. I have a few seeds for trade: karoo rose pyschotria viridis gourds coleas ipomoea what i'm looking for bursera graveolens (palo santo) salvia apiana (white sage) any brunfelsia, any brugmansia, ephedra sinica (mormon tea)

I now know for sure I'll be able to put them in the ground in my new residence. For the past few nights I've left them outside in a spot that gets only a few hours of sunlight. It's been pretty warm at night, and unless it dips below 5ºC again I think I might let them ride it out, but not water them until it gets warmer, probably over 25ºc or so. I know it's not what you guys recommended (cold and dark) but it intuitively feels right. If it doesn't work out well, I'll chalk it up to the stupidity of attempting a cactus collection in the winter and give it a serious go in the spring/summer. My mini lophs weren't looking too great, so I put them outside too. Again, I shouldn't have started them in the winter and keeping them inside has become difficult. Also, my N. Rustica buddy is only 4 leaves into life but it loving the outdoors!

Hello all, I have a situation I wanted to get some advice on. (back story) I have among my collection a 50cm San Pedro Pachanoi I bought from a well known seller on eBoy US a few months ago. It's winter here so I've kept it mostly indoors and have hardly watered at all. It's in a small pot, the seller advised repotting it for the spring, but I have a few options for putting it in the ground somewhere in about a month or so. (situation) The tip is showing pale green growth. From what I've read this could be too much water and not enough light or vice versa. What should I do between now and next month? I have a (approx) 5 gallon white bucket I could transplant it into, and it's getting to be nearly 20ºC some days, and 5ºC at night, but warming slightly, so I could start leaving it outside to catch some warm sun. Any ideas suggestions? I also have a measly 10cm Pachanoi that is doing just fine, and a few loph and astrophytum in pots that look a bit on the dry side. I can post pictures, just need to find a camera cable. Thanks!

What if I'm not 100% certain I'll have ground to put it in? should I still wait a while to repot it? I'm thinking of going with either the 5 gallon one or one of those big plastic tubs, 20 gallons probably.

that's my concern. how much biomass can that roof take? or maybe it'll turn into a garden for harvesting pads and fruit for food?
