☽Ţ ҉ĥϋηϠ₡яღ☯ॐ€ðяئॐ♡Pϟiℓℴϟℴ Posted October 23, 2017 G'day fellow Plantkin, I dnno if this moss died with being bone dry or can resurrect but I think I read this idea in a bonsai book a thousand years ago in the deepest darkest depths of the erm .. erm .. amazon jungle? yeah whatever.. too long to recall anyway .. so if it hasn't died, what dyu think the chances are of it growing a nice carpet in a pot? I lightly sprinkled some in the Caapitariam in the hope of a good flying caapit for the plants to surf and gave a nice spraying of HMA filtered water.
shonman Posted October 27, 2017 I heard if you grind up moss and mix with buttermlk you can just paint it on and it will grow where you paint it
shonman Posted October 27, 2017 Although that is more suited for on cement than in planters....
Anodyne Posted October 27, 2017 ^^ I thought that buttermilk tek was for lichen? I have a few mates who do bonsai and they get the best moss beds by crumbling up a chunk of moss with sand and sprinkling over the surface. Slower, but works much better than trying to transplant a big chunk in the long run. But this is just breaking it apart with your fingers, not grinding it to powder. Not sure that mosses would survive being ground that fine. That said, the one in the photos looks like it might be a selaginella(?), which are pretty tough and can even take over your garden if you let them.
☽Ţ ҉ĥϋηϠ₡яღ☯ॐ€ðяئॐ♡Pϟiℓℴϟℴ Posted October 27, 2017 Thanks you guys! makes me wanna try lichenate and mossify all the concrete that I can and make it look lush and more friendly
☽Ţ ҉ĥϋηϠ₡яღ☯ॐ€ðяئॐ♡Pϟiℓℴϟℴ Posted October 29, 2017 I think I'm gna try that on this resin cast Mayan mushroom stone if I can track down some buttermilk .. will just butter or milk work?
waterboy 2.0 Posted October 29, 2017 Full cream/fat milk, not the skimmed shit. That's what I've used to encourage lichen. Here if just paint it on and nature does its thing as I'm surrounded by them, I just make it more conducive to being colonised If it's raw stone the lichens intime prepare it for moss to succeed, through breaking down the rock and producing a bit of OM I've got a mate that does a tek with bonsai as Ano describes, and has created some stunning dioramas, a sort of sand mix dressing,as far as I know he has a stash prepped up before planting/reporting.... I will see if I can get more Intel/secrets
☽Ţ ҉ĥϋηϠ₡яღ☯ॐ€ðяئॐ♡Pϟiℓℴϟℴ Posted October 30, 2017 Thanks fella that sounds bangun , there's good orchid mounted bark and branches on the bonsai I'm about to replace that will be a good canvas to try getting them growing on, already tried with lichens just binding them with fishing line to an orchid mount of Rodriguesia .. dnno if it'll work tho yet .. and yeah no probs with that I don't regard that diluted stuffs as milk .. I dnno even why they sell it .. if I wanted semi skimmed I'd save an empty or 2 of full fat, buy a new one, divide it evenly 'tween said bottles, fill with water .. and even further dilution for skimmed lol although I often suspect they've been incrementally weakening the "full fat" one since the 80s when it tasted much creamier and healthier ... i hope lichens dont break down the resin cast .. given me 2nd thoughts for it .. but totes love the sounds of your experience at it mate
Anodyne Posted October 30, 2017 Some folks growing lichens also add a bit of soluble plant food and agar/gelatine to their milk/buttermilk, for extra nutrients & extra-stickiness, respectively. I've never tried it, but they sounded like useful additions?
☽Ţ ҉ĥϋηϠ₡яღ☯ॐ€ðяئॐ♡Pϟiℓℴϟℴ Posted October 30, 2017 just tried using fanta in a spray bottle for stickyness and save any milk pong but got some on the plants.. does fanta damage plants? , maybe I should've sprayed them with a bit of water .. I guess time will reveal if they mind
