What is this contraption?

Recommended Posts

Sorry this is probably the wrong topic, but I found this bizzar light fixture at a tip.

Does anyone know what it is or how it works?

It doesnt appear to have any ventilation which is surprising considering it looks to house a hps or other excessively hot bulb.

Kindly,

HY

lower power floodlight isnt it? Like what was used as a commercial shop fitting.

You just make sure you pick the right globe style to fit into it. Cant tell if there is a ballast bx attached or was inline.

Reptile lamp used in a well ventilated enclosure.

Just a guess.

Since the ballast is configurable.

They can be used for growing plants one of my first lamps was a similar one . You can get hps bulbs for them now but if your savy enough you can make a cord to run to a lamp shade and use it for a veg/seedling light

yeah 150w double ended metal halide. ok for veg but they get hot.

you would be far better off gutting it and running a cord to a lampholder. either just hanging bare or buying something like this http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Horizontal-lamped-Aluminium-reflector-c-w-Lamp-Cord-Socket-for-HPS-MH-Grow-Lamps-/271501138263?hash=item3f36ba9957

if you hang it bare you just use a standard elliptical lamp (like a small footy or egg. how ever the HPS is E40 base and MH is E27) and with the reflector a tubular (like a glass dildo. easy MH/HPS change)

i think the reflector with tubular lamp option would be best (btw that control gear should run both HPS and MH)

"btw im pretty sure inside it will have like an ogs150 ballast or similar, ignitor and capacitor." careful if you open it up and it's been plugged in in last week or two. those darn things can hold some serious charge in them. for rather a long time. I've had such things boot me real good. thats why i no longer work with 240v systems late at night or when stressed (years like this).
