migraineur Posted January 22, 2014 Hi My psychotria carthagenensis appears to be producing berries. Are these worth keeping and planting? I vaguely remember something about germination rates being really poor so I am unsure. Any advice would be much appreciated.
planthelper Posted January 22, 2014 they are worth, seeding out, and giving them away! they are not viable for long, so better not try to store them. they need ample heat to germinate well.
migraineur Posted January 22, 2014 Yeah, I was thinking that I should at least give it a go so I can increase genetic diversity.

Do you have any tips for planting the seeds? Do I need to do anything special to the berries etc?
planthelper Posted January 23, 2014 there are different schools of though, regarding seeding psychotria... some people swear, one has to leave the skin on the berries, others say to remove it..., I remove the coat... maybe the sphagnum moss method would suit you best. place moist (but not drenching wet) sphagnum moss into a plastic bag of appropriate size, than add the seeds, and seal well. place indoors, and wait, once the seeds have awoken, plant them out into small individual pots. Uneak Posted January 24, 2014 I ordered 30 of those berries once, and didn't get around to planting most of them until they had started to rot a bit. Threw a handful of those into a pot of seedling mix, berries and all, kept the pot moist and in the shade, and now I have a pot full of tiny seedlings. I hope yours germinate well.
