earthmind Posted February 11, 2014 Im a new member and a noob, so i find this thread helpful. Has anyone ever trialed diatomaceous earth for cacti and such? I have used it for bonsai with great success, although I find it can be hard to source at times.
Myeloblast Posted February 11, 2014 I've used DE to try and prevent/treat pests with mixed results at best. It was just difficult to work with in my situation. It has also always been a very fine powder when I've seen it for sale, so if you mean to use it in a soil mix I think it would reduce drainage and clog up the mix at any appreciable percentage of the volume. hostilis Posted February 12, 2014 It's very easy to source where i am. It's posted all over ebay. I have had very good results by dusting my plants with it to get rid of thrips.

I use it straight on its own. I uses the larger size, I think 7mm-10mm but I would sieve out the fines. It's very free flowing and holds a lot of moisture. I only have afew cacti at the moment which is in a mix I made, I'm unsure if DE would hold on to too much moisture for cacti.
