shonman Posted November 1, 2013 Does anyone have any suggestions or stories regarding shipping plants overseas? I bought some myself, from Shaman Australis, back in its early days around 2000..... Now people are asking me........what do you think? Colombia? Peru? Italy? South Africa?Sweden?
nothinghead Posted November 2, 2013 Depends on the plant, depends on the shipping time. Most cacti will make it anywhere, many of the more fragile vascular plants are tough to get shipped safely domestically. SABs shipping has always struck me as effective because the plant remains in a sealed off pot (so the roots are relatively undisturbed at packing and receiving), they are staked to shelter the plant from rough handling, and seem to have enough water/oxygen to get them through.
shonman Posted November 2, 2013 People are asking for small tropical trees. I am also looking into growing out plants for water gardens, probably for a more local market. Perhaps plant that were generated by micro propagation, sealed in their own environment (like a clear plastic cup for example) And packed with paper towels would work......all securely taped down of course. What I have heard from 'Bob' (his real name!.....and no, he is not my uncle....) Is that he goes by the 'three day rule'. If it can be shipped, and arrive writhing three days, it will be ok. And more time than that, the plant is affected and takes longer to recover... I would definitely be interested in more details about Shaman Australis packing method, if it is not too rude to ask...... They have always impressed me, since the beginning. Also, any stories of others who have shipped overseas...... Thanks for your input!
