My Newest Pachanoi

Recommended Posts

well ill give it a go in a couple of months. doing a permaculture course in about a month and I hope to pick up a few ideas for what I can do on my block so I've been holding off on any more garden work until then.

I have a partially cleared acre block on the northern side of a hill but because of the forest it only gets full sun for maybe 5-6 hours a day in summer, otherwise its shaded out by the surrounding trees. if that's enough for em then ill give it a shot

I think it would work Whoami ... They can adapt to alot of conditions ... some plants are very hardy such as PC Pach and there are some that can't stand too much water like some bridgesiis... A key would be soil so maybe read up a bit , since it rains alot there I would say the soil would require optimal draining, but since that spot is on a hill it may just work out beautifully...

I hope by the time you get that going i'll be in a position to get some of this clone both 'down under' and 'up above'

LOL Hunnicutt! yeah baby yaaah!

Spine Collector, i notice you are in usda zone 8b, me too. What is your experience in gowing cacti outdoors? I made some tests with one pachanoi and he managed to survive 2 winters but at the last one he developed root rot.

My question: is it better to have the roots less deep so that they air out faster so they don´t stay wet. Is it beneficial to plant on a elevated ground\dirt? Do you plant them deep or shallow on the ground, just enough that they don't tumble? And what about the freezing temps? Do you protect the tips?

Thanks

I call the short spines ones "She" lol but thats just meh

welcome to SAB I see its your first post.. you a nooker?

To make a clear picture, I am currently living somwhere that is technically not my place and I have been wishy washy

the past year about moving... I finally decided in the last few months that I was gonna put some in the ground here but

i haven't gotten around to it..

they did okay earlier in the year with near freezing temps, but in clay pots not in the ground.. I put a styro cup over one lol but left the others alone except the smaller ones which I brought inside... it rained pretty good for 3 days in a row when it was cold and not an issue.... I think it got near freezing or just below, light frost... they can take some winter moisture I know that for sure

I really don't think it matters as much in the ground if the soil is right in a raised bed... Zelly says he's got his PC Pachs in pan clay and they were flowering through the winter in cali but thats a different zone. I was going to try that but I decided against putting PC pach in the ground just cause I don't want them pollinating everything lol but yeah Im planning to do raised beds by next spring, and to plant several rooted cuttings in the ground.... that would give me all winter to prepare the beds with some drainage material.. I think Im gonna try different types of mineral rocks like granite grit and maybe also some expanded shale, but like you, its much of an experiment for me

ultimately my long term goal is to move toa zone 9 location... I really think most years there wouldn't be an issue here, just those fluke ice overs that happen once or twice a decade really seem to throw a hatchet in things...

as far as growing them outdoors in pots... really we don't get enough rain in this area lol have to water them a bunch

we go weeks at a time without a drop usually... our spring rain was lower than usual this year too I think...
I have most of mine in filtered sun under a clear tarp and so I pretty much manage their water on my own schedule,

lately watering every 2 or 3 days... its supposed to be back up over 100F for a few days here ugh

Thank you Spine Collector for the report of how you grow them and also for the nice welcome.

My experience in these 5 years that i grow trichocereus.. is that thin cacti and small ones (3 inches tall) get frost damage easily on the tip. It never occured to me to put some kind of protection but i have read and from your post above, that styrofom cap helps to prevent frost at least until older age where they get established. Thicker ones resist frost damage better but then there is the issue of root rot in my case because of bad water drainage.

Thanks for your insights

P.s whats a nooker? :P

Sorry Kiang! looks like ya made two posts and then p00f!

what is a n00ker? <laff> tbh im really not sure

anyways I thought I'd use this thread to show off some more Jessica plants I got

that I think are all Pachanoids...

Here are two im temporarily calling Pachanoi "Jessica Rabbit" and "Jessica II"

post-11432-0-36687000-1395671495_thumb.j post-11432-0-41488600-1395672461_thumb.j

I say temporary cause im sure there were some others that went around

and who knows if they got pet names or not.. Jessica II is about 5 inches wide

at the thickest part

Here is one I got last year... at first I thought Huanucoensis but no one at the nook seemed

to agree... it has some curvy spines and that throws me off so I dunno... its my thickest

plant.. I can't remember for sure but its between 16-18 inches around & about 6 inches/15 cm across

I put her in that pot to root over the winter... and the little pups that started forming last year

and already on the move for springtime! one of the many plants I have to repot soon...

Here are some other Jessicoids I obtained maybe 2 years ago.... they haven't grown

at all but I accidentally confirmed one of them has grown roots and so they are in

my plans to repot into larger pots along with this years fresh batch of cuttings...

post-11432-0-01805000-1395673196_thumb.j

Im not even sure if these are trichos but I suspect they are Pachanois

I put them up for ID a while back and that was the only guesses I recall

I really hope they put out new growth this year ... they were originally

labeled bridgesii lol .... I suspect they might be the same as "Jessica Rabbit"

(I think EG would know why im snickering lol)

The plants grown in intense light grew this year finally, one of them only pupping and the similar one I acquired more recently has borne a fat puppy

also the pups expanded on the really thick one... still looks alot like Huanucoensis to me
did most of the growing early in the year I thought this one would have grown alot more

strangely the first plant in this thread (OP) didn't grow at all this year.. maybe put out a few new spines and that was it
all year... I ferted towards the end of the summer heat and just got some rot spots show up and eventually dried .. shrugs
