Alice Posted December 6, 2012 Nice! Quite the collection you have there. Those grafts look shweet. Keep us updated on the Peganum's - the difficult part lies ahead.
Justler Posted December 6, 2012 (edited) Nice collection you've got there Khala. I'm interested in your methods for Peganum Harmala, as from what I've read they aren't very easy to grow. Care to share? Edited December 6, 2012 by Justler
Alice Posted December 6, 2012 (edited) That last picture, is that Melissa (lemon balm)? Or catnip/catmint? Edited December 6, 2012 by Alice
Khala Posted December 6, 2012 With the peganum harmala, I germinated them in warm water and left them in paper towel until they sprouted. Then I put them in sandy perlite mix and water them pretty uncommonly, mainly when I see they are dry. They are kept out of direct sunlight at this stage. Alice, definitely catnip. It's starting to flower now and they strongly resemble catnip over lemon balm.
bogfrog Posted December 6, 2012 Beautiful collection, everything looks very healthy. What is that double headed trich? Do you have a cat, Khala? I've always wondered how people can grow catnip when they have a cat? I have tried growing it from seed, kitty eats all the seedlings, i have tried buying established plants from a shop and kitty eats the all leaves, rolls all over it, breaking all the stems and then digs the plant out and it dies in the sun! Khala Posted December 7, 2012 Hey bogfrog, no no cat haha. The double trich is a Trichocereus macrogonus. Very cool, I got it as a single headed cactus and it eventually grew like that. Thankyou
planthelper Posted December 7, 2012 onetime, a member posted that, peganum harmala realy loves alkalaine soil. if i remeber correctly, rue never grew for most people, till they added, lot's of lime/dolomite, to the mixture (and make it a friable aspect and mixture). aswell it can't be kept in pots for long, one has to plant rue out soon. in some places like sa, rue is a weed, but generaly, most people here never managed to grow rue to maturety. some weeds are fuzzy, regarding there condition, soil and climat wise... hmm, because this is a weed, it's hard to grow, in cultivation.
Justler Posted December 7, 2012 Cheers, thanks Khala and PH for the tips. Next mission of mine will be trying to grow a Peganum Harmala plant.

I have two cats, and they are completely insensitive to catnip and catmint. Not the slightest bit interested. I have a big plant right next to the cat door. Nothing. I wish I had druggo cats
bogfrog Posted December 7, 2012 @ Alice, Have u tried offering them dried leaves? Many cats won't touch the fresh stuff, the smell seems to be too intense and puts them off. Also try some valerian, that works even better! @ Khala, I think you might be a pretty magical person for your plant to split like that once you got it. Thats a special one for sure
lhb2444 Posted December 8, 2012 Yeah the 2 headed macros is a real winner, wish mine would do that
