Cacti Collection in Perth

Recommended Posts

My father has been telling me about a guy he has known for years that has a cacti collection and that he would see if he could take me around there some time to have a look.

Well today was the day that I got to meet another amazing old time collector. This gentleman has been collecting for many years ( from what I understand he started in the fifties ) and he allowed me to take some photos :)

The photos are only the main part of his collection in one of his green houses. The rest of his yard including the veranda is filled with cacti, euphorbia's and succulents . As with a lot of these older guys he is now struggling to keep his collection in top condition but he wont give it up and he still buys new plants he just loves his cacti.

Check out the size of the Astro's and Gymo's :drool2:

Does he water all of them by hand? Quite the collection there. My girlfriend has been telling me that I have to many cacti lately, these pictures helped my defense :)

That big bridgesoid reminds me a bit of Eileen..

It does a bit but it isn't as fat as Eileen normally grows and it is very blue. It could be growing conditions also ( in the ground between to green houses ) I am trying to get a cut off him as I would like to see how it grows under my conditions.

Cheers

Speaking of which, I bought a few metres of a cactus I was told was Eileen, it was skinny but the person I bought it from told me it was because of growing conditions... so far growth has been very slow compared to most of the other cacti (a small fraction of Super Pedro for instance) and still very skinny... this is 6 or 7 plants in different parts of the yard.

It's not Eileen is it? :(

I hope the seller was just vague and made a mistake and wasn't ripping me off on purpose.

I've had Eileen's not grow that quick - to me it's like most other bridgesii in that it can really turn it on and grow fast, or can stall out..

I find that she tends to slow down with the amount of pups she tends to throw but the base of my main plant continuous to fatten up. She is still one of the fattest bridgesii that I have along with Psycho0. I actually planted two Psycho0 cuttings and a Eileen cutting ( all the same size ) at the same time in the same size pots the same mix and kept them all together so the conditions are the same. They all grew at the same rate last year but the Psycho0's have both got a couple of inches on Eileen now and they a getting a fair bit fatter as well.

Chilli Super Pedro is fast it is the fastest out of my bigger cacti but as with all of them they slow down once the roots are feeding a number of pups as well as the main column.

My Peruvian Len is right up there with Super Pedro but it has never thrown any pups so all of the growth goes into the main column so it is still fat but it doesn't have the over all plant weight of some of the others.

Cheers

I am pretty sure it's not Eileen, it seems more than just stalled I have them in different sized pots, plastic and stone, different soil mixes too.. they are all just skinny little things that don't really appear to be getting any fatter or growing very much at all.

My Len has been pretty slow compared to the sp, but I only rooted it this year. Psycho0 is cranking, putting the 'Eileen'to shame! I was suspect when I first saw them and as usual in hindsight I think I should have just followed my gut.

I was thinking they might be good to cut up for grafting stock, but wouldn't the slow growth I am seeing now translate into slow growth for the grafts?

Did you get the Eileen locally ? If you did pm me who the person was that you got it off and I might be able to tell you if should be legit or not. Or post some pics she is quite easy to ID but saying that there has been some others around lately that look a bit like her

Edit : I can sort you with a piece if you want to grow another one alongside what you have. :)

Cheers
