CSS - I found a place to buy proper sieve sizes

Recommended Posts

Hey guys. I've been looking for ages for a place to buy the correct sized sieves for preparing Coarse Sharp Sand (CSS).

This has proven difficult to track down - but I finally found a place that stocks prospecting sieves in the exact dimensions required - a 0.2mm mesh size, and a 2mm mesh size.

If you buy both, it costs $78 with shipping. I'm gonna get me a pair next week.

0.2mm size (ok so it's actually 0.25mm, but who cares) - http://www.aussiesapphire.com.au/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=2917

2.0mm size - http://www.aussiesapphire.com.au/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=2912

Just thought I'd share this here in case anybody else has been looking :)

0.2mm :o Thats a VERY fine sieve, are you sure you want one that fine?

I generally use a 1mm 2mm 4mm & occasionally a 6mm. the only time i use a sieve smaller than 0.5mm is for activated charcoal

I thought it might be a little fine as well at first, but according to Torsten and a few others coarse sharp sand is "officially" particles between 0.2 and 2.0mm...I'll see if I can track down the thread he says this in...

EDIT: found it! http://www.shaman-au...ndpost&p=183947

I know it is officially, but unless you oven dry your sand good luck actually achieving much with a 0.2mm sieve.

I'm yet to meet a local sand that will go through the fine sieves, the odd bit of clay & organic matter coupled with a bit of moisture see's them well & truly gummed up quick smart.

Are you buying cleaned & graded sand or just landscape grade material? If your using cleaned sands the 0.2 should work a treat, but if your using landscape grade you might want to order a 0.8 or 0.9mm sieve as well & at $40 each they are quite cheap.

I might have to grab 3 then

I'll be using clean sand I think, but it's always good to have the option.
